NO

1. 4 years is very less for gaining a quality education. inspite of 4 years people coming out of college are shit...
2. this will create groupism. more politics will start. people will sit in home and prepare for addmission in good college.
3. military training put hatred in people. india
4. india is a growing economy, we need workers to maintain the progress and not social workers.
5. Indian village conditions are not good. 2-3 deaths here and there will spoil all the real motive of this excercise.

I would suggest college have a better studies so that people are productive when they come out of college

YES

1. The kind of things we study in 4 years can easily be completed in 2-3 years
2. Students coming out of college doesnt live in real world. i would say their view are a bit unrealistic and dumb.
3. In college they are in more competitive environment because of which things like group feelings, team work, helping, laughing is lost.
4. not only social service, but a mixture of military dicipline training and social work is good.
5. and finally at any point of time if India has 20 million helping hand then just WOW...

All work and no play makes life dull

Yes, a year devoted to social service or basic training on the lines of armed forces will go a long way in inculcating values that are being otherwise eroded due to over burden of issues which are of nil or less relevance.
eg.Prince Harry of the British royal family participating in the war against Taliban in Afghanistan. I am sure his presence in Afghanistan is not 100% risk free.
It is very common amongst many countries to call the civilians to defend their country in case of any emergency arising. That is because they have been imparted training at some point of time. In some countries, the civilians are
required to kind of undergo training after every few years.

Get Them For A Military Training
by Sethu Madhavan on Mar 01, 2008 03:57 PM

I feel we Should have a military training for a period of One year so that we know what is decipline and how to stay fit and clean and how to obey orders and execute things well. Do some social work in the order of assisting adverse situation helping people in emergency training should be in that nature rather than understand the rural areas. It is not a bad Idea but to do that we should be able to do it in a deciplined manner which our education does not look into till 2.

Should students take a year off before graduation?
by AK Merchant on Mar 01, 2008 03:20 PM  | Hide replies

This is an excellent proposal. In fact in our Baha'i community we have a concept "Year of Service" whereby students offer their services in a variety of fields before entering college. The exposure to the world outside their home and immediate circle of friends and the spirit of fellowship in serving the society helps the young people to mature and learn things which they would never get in a college or university. Colleges and universities should give credit for those who venture into such service and not hold it against them for missing out a year.

Suggestion of the time
by Sangeeta Verma on Mar 01, 2008 03:10 PM

Very good suggestion to imbibe national culture at this age, when one is fully matured and can see the lifestyle of different sects with sense of value and understanding. In most of the European countries fater the II world War, students of colleges and universities had complulsury services fot two months durign the vacation in vilaage to help them in harvest collection. They were paid very handsome;y, besides entire boarding/ lodging expenses were borne by the village only. A lot many foreign students, studying there, also used to join such brigades. And the resul was fabulous. At one side you ear good money, on the other you help in a noble job. And the most importatnt message, besides learning life and culture of such places, one learns to value each corn of our basic food.
I appreciate and salute the person who put onto such a good suggestion. I am sure that each one of the coming generation will be benefitted immesely by this project. But the structuring end monitoring should be worked out meticulously.

how much feasible it is ?????????????
by sanjay verma on Mar 01, 2008 12:56 PM

Idea per say is very good, intentions are very good, but how practicle it is? Yes we can make a beginning with with few good graduate schools opting it, choice to be given to students, maybe some corporate house to provide some stipend to students opting for this initiative (at least in the beginning) and we can have a monitoring & assessing module to see the effectiveness of this initiative.

Slowly it can be replicated on broader scale.

Good idea
by Ganesh on Feb 27, 2008 12:59 PM

Universities can tie up with NGOs and let small group of students do a project/research/community service for at least 3 months as part of the course itself for every stream (Science/Arts/Commerce). I would say a mix of Militery training and service/research through NGOs in a different state is ideal. This will definitely help young students understand and have broader perspective about life than just an understanding about their surroundings.

should students take a year off graduation?

Why not? No doubt, this idea of compulsory social service is good and broadens horizons of the student. It is all the more necessary in India with our diversity. I feel that the one year can be split into 9 months of compulsory military training and 3 months of "social service" to indoctrinate discipline in our students.
