It is ironic that rediff.com has an article entitled Annoying junk mail.
Because I have been at the receiving end of annoying junk mail from Rediff themselves for over 2 years now.
I live in the UK and I keep receiving rediff shoppoing emails about deals in India. All emails emanate from a 'donoreply' email id. I am, therefore, unable to unsubscrible I have writen to none other than the CEO of Rediff - Ajit Balakrishnan. And I have had no response. And my junk mail continues.
Would someone from rediff.com write to me at my hotmail id -- shankose@hotmail.com letting me know how I can stop this junk mail from rediff.com happening? I receive junk mail on another private email id which I have not chosen to disclose here.

Hi Shankar Srinivasan,
I think the junk mail and spam comes because we show some interest field ticked in box while we open a new E mail account.Previously we had the option of 'To unsubscribe' facility, now it is not possible.
So better change the E mail ID and don't show any area of interest while opening a new ID

I'm also frustrated now. I blocked email id too even after rediff shopping is spamming since last 6-7 yrs now.
One of the ways is not to publicize your e-mail address, in filling forms in websites and on your web page as well! If you want to publish your e-mail on your web page, automated e-mail spam can be avoided if the e-mail address is not given directly as we type -- using something like [AT] or an image of '@' instead of typing '@' directly etc. Some junk mails may reach the mail box because of the various preferences that we give while creating a mail account.
An excellent solution for using within MS Outlook. It uses bayesian technology to filter the junk mail as against genuine. You can train it to differentiate between real and junk mail. Integrates very coolly with MS Outlook.
frnds try this - bluebottle.com , it has pop/smtp access ie u can configure on outlook and xcellent spam filter and all for free . i have been using it for past 1 yr and no spam /unwanted mail has ever been delivered .
Hell, nothing works. I am very careful about giving away my email id on websites, but still, on a nice evening, a colleague posted my email id on some free wallpaper site. And well, just cant do anything then.
Now, on Outlook, its just too easy to hit delete. Its the fastest way I have found till now. Clean out the "deleted Items" folder once a week or so.
Yahoo and Gmail have good spam filters and hence we are mostly spared there. The same method works here - Just check the spam and hit delete.
The problem with anti-spam software is that it might filter out the genuine emails too. I have lost some mails to Bulk mail on yahoo and gmail.
Thanks, Ambuj Saxena. But even after all such efforts, spam still arrives unwelcomed :-( Though sure your methods reduce the amount of spam drastically :-)
1) Use an e-mail client with superior spam guard filter. 2) Keep separate e-mail accounts for official use and personal use. Try to use a disposable account for giving at websites where you are unsure of the privacy of your e-mail address. 3) Do not display your e-mail address on a public website. If you e-mail address is digen.verma@freemail.com, display it as digenDOTvermaATfreemailDOTcom. This way spambots won't be able to read your e-mail address, but humans won't have any problem discerning your e-mail address. You can also use services like http://tinymailto.com or http://contactify.com to prevent your e-mail address being available publicly. 4) If you use GMail, you can supply creative e-mail address to actually find who compromised your e-mail account. For example if your e-mail address is digen.verma@gmail.com and ICICI bank asks for your e-mail address, you can provide them with an address like digenverma icici@gmail.com. Because of the way gmail treats e-mail addresses, the mail will still reach your e-mail account; and by looking at the e-mail header, you can find out who compromised your e-mail account. 5) Lastly, try to discourage your friends from mass mailing you e-mail forwards. Since your e-mail address is embedded in the body of the mail, even if the mail reaches a spammer after a dozen or so forwards, he can still extract your e-mail address from it. If it is absolutely essential for you to receive them, instruct your friends to add you as a BCC contact.

In point number 4, the address I suggested supplying is digenverma(plus)icici@gmail.com. Because of the limitations of the text parser used by rediff.com, the "plus" sign did not get displayed.

More to point number 4...If you use Yahoo! and can afford to pay for a Yahoo! Mail Plus e-mail account, you can choose up to 200 different disposable e-mail addresses to deal with spam. Once you find out a specific disposable e-mail address has started receiving spams, you can disassociate it and spam will stop automatically.
6) Use e-mail addresses that are at least 6~7 characters long. Often spammers use common combination of alphabets to spam. 7) Actively report the spam messages you receive in inbox to your mail service providers by making them as "spam" or "bulk" depending on the service provider you use. 8) If any spam mail comes with a "unsubscribe" link, be wary of using it. A return mail from an e-mail address only confirms a human present and reading the mail. Only use the unsubscribing link when the service provider is a reputed website. Even then there is no guarantee that it will work. 9) If your spam filter is routinely missing to mark an e-mail as spam, use customized e-mail filter (or message rules) to dump them to trash without requiring repeated intervention.
If you follow these rules, there is a good chance that you won't be troubled by spam any more.

Mr. Saxena, You have taken pain to guide the rediff friends. Thank you very much for all the pain you have taken.
I recieve atleast 3 to 4 junk mails everyday.Eg : getitfromusa.com,national lottery..etc etc... I have never subscribed to stuffs like these.Daily I direct these mails as spam and block them...but still somehow,I find these kinda' mails evryday in my inbox.Any solutions?
Spammers have got different methods to attack your inbox. There is nothing which can help you get rid of spams completely. I'd rather suggest, keep 2-3 different email Ids and use them meticulously. One for Personal, one official, One financial(Alerts etc) and one to play with. That's what I did, I dont miss any email anymore.
