Using Cellphone while driving
by Umesh Shoney on Jul 22, 2007 11:48 AM

I feel the only way to stop this anarchy of talking while driving is to unleash an equally anarchic law, empowering every citizen to penalise (say Rs. 1000/- per offense) anyone seen to be phoning and driving at the same time. No explanations acceptable, only a couple of witnesses from the public should do. To my mind this is the only way this malady can be remedied. How many police or any other enforcers can you legally deploy. People have to understand and discipline themselves, and this will happen only if there is a fear in their minds.

Wireless headsets are equal to your front seat passanger
by Suresh Kumar on Jul 19, 2007 11:17 AM

The people driving or riding in bike or pedestrians should not talk in mobile phone which takes one hand out or speaker phone which might not be loud enough so you keep bending. This obviously leads to distraction and may even lead to fatal accident. This is equivalent to smoking while driving. But when it comes to blue tooth headset, i don't understand how it distract a person. If a blue tooth/wireless headset can distract a person, then any passenger sitting in the car and bike can also distract a person. So both wireless headset and passengers should be banned.

So it appears talking in mobile directly or holding it with speaker phone distracts a person which should be banned. However, wireless headsets need not be as they are equal to a passenger sitting next to you rather better than that as you don't have to keep turning while talking.

Cellphone while driving...
by Praveen K Singh on Jul 18, 2007 04:37 PM

Cell phone talk with wireless of with wire hands free device is a danger as it diverts the attention from the road.

Other distractions like driving with your girlfriend, talking to fellow passenger, looking out on advts hoarding, thinking about work or home are equily dangerous.

But with time and practice drivers are able to drive even with these hinderances around (Just like pilots are able to fly fighter jets during war, while taking instructions from the control/base station).
To me it seems this is one more law to help police to book us and make money.

Mobile phone is integaral part of our interaction tool for every day communcation. We have to think ways to make it safer and nothing more nothing less.I think cordless earphone, blue tooth, voice enable electronics should be allowed and legally permitted to be used.In most times it is the fear of armtwisting policewallahs which get your attention diverted than that of talking on cell phone...

Do you use your cellphone while driving?
by Jack Johnson on Jul 18, 2007 03:31 PM  | Hide replies

It is not only in India but every where people love to chat away while driving. Here in UAE I have seen people using mobile phones while driving. There were 96000 road accidents at Dubai alone in the year 2006. How many occurred due to inadvertent use of mobile is not known. A strong deterrent punishment should be meted out to those who are found using mobile. Texting a message while driving is worst. All mobile phones must have a feature incorporated to text a reply that the person is driving. Person should be able to switch on this feature simply by pressing a single button. This might help to some extent.

Don't Talk while on Driving - You are inviting death for you and others also
by tatatata on Jul 18, 2007 03:06 PM

You are in Danger when your concentartion is not on driving but on some talk. The accedents are mainly because of the lack of concentration in driving and the person who drives concentrates more on the discussion and not on diriving and on coming vehicles and people. If you are so interested in talk why not stop at a side-by and discuss and then start driving.

If people get into trouble with usage of bluetooth to get their teeth red, and also give red teehth to the others and do crimes and do not want to understand the problems behind lack of concentration and driving, a driver even on drink concentrate some little on road but not these people who talk on cell phones... God only can show them the way.
