Manipur - a beautiful place and her beautiful peole.
by Swapan Dey on Apr 23, 2007 02:41 PM

Manipur is a beautiful place and that is what the author has written about. I wanted to learn more about Manipur so I scrolled down for more material but I was shocked.

Most of the matter on the discussion board has gone on a totally different tangent. People from one region are bad-mouthing the other. What is happening to readers of rediff.com. The discussion boards are always pathetic and sickening.

Lets go back to seeking and realising the many more beautiful places and peoples of India. There is much to learn from the many forms of nature and learn to curb or destroy our baser instincts.

Manipul;
by Rajeev Gopinath on Apr 21, 2007 07:34 PM

I am from Kerala, presently working in Saudi Arabia. I am very much impressed of reading the article about Manipur, because I have been there for 4 years, starting from 1993 to 1997. Manipur has really an amazing nature. I can't forget the beauty of Manipur. I was staying in various places of Manipur; i.e. Imphal, Lamphel, Singimei, Thoubal, Yaripok, Churachandpur, etc. I could even speak Manipuri language (Meithei). I have got many memorable friends from Manipur and I miss them all lot. I had visited almost all the important places in Manipur. I used to join the their traditional dance, perform during holi festival, which is known as "Tabal Chomba". The people of Manipur are really very simple and very kind to outsiders, especially if you mingle with the villagers. I was very fond of their dishes as well. I wish, if I could visit again Manipur and enjoy the beauty and meet all my old friends.

A different place
by Sviya S on Apr 21, 2007 09:29 AM

I have been to Imphal, about a month and a half-back. The drive from airport to the hotel was very nice..., the city appeared to be quiet beautiful. Of course, beauty is a matter of perception, it certainly looked a lot cleaner than UP or Bihar, for sure.

It was during the Holi, a festival that is celebrated over 5 days. I am told that they play with one type of colour or material each day! Most of the shops were closed. And one can see young folks driving on bikes and 4-wheelers with colours. Scary, if you don't want to be courorified! It seems they extort not to colour, and no body seemed happy with that.

Another thing to notice was the presence of armed forces (BSF). They were stationed in large numbers for the recent elections and people appeared very anxious that these troops were not back! It was natural, as unlike in other places we see, the personnel were almost always 'in position', ready to fire at a half-a-second notice! It's scary! Even Loktak is not open for boating (though the jawans would gladly take you for a tour over the imposing hill). I was glad to see that after the Holi the jawans seemed to be going back. :)

There is also a waterfall near Imphal. And that's a beautiful place too and if you go at the right time (mornings) you'd see small rainbow stretching across.

When the markets did open, we had strolled along. And definitely there was no anti feeling we noticed. On the other hand, we got broad smiles and compliments for looks and ornaments that was worn. A small chat actually led to waiver of tea... Yes, tea is wonderful there! And the hotel provided the best of chola for bhatura that I ever had. In all, it has been a wonderful experience!

:)

U flea-ridden Bangladeshi. Let me tell you the truth; people there do not hate Indians. They are as tolerant as anyone in any one in other parts of India. However, people really hate Bangladheshis which is misinterpreted as hating Indians. Cos Bangladeshis are the sources of all troubles in North East. Bangladeshis are like viruses; give them a roof and they take hold of your houses. Just look at Tripura and Assam.

Our cuisine to our people are exotic, handsome and beautiful as our landscape. You ugly freaks are making our landscape dirty. Go back to Bangladesh.
