Yes, It is true. In any organization where job profiles are not set, Job Timings are not set employers will take extra time & additional work from employees. HRD departments can do lot in this area. Fixation of Job profiles, job timings , fix responsibilities, set targets for completion of jobs could be solution for this problem.

Ofcourse I was overworked when I used to work in India
by Pasta on Sep 21, 2006 11:40 AM

I think in India we are overworked. I believe there are several reasons for it.
i. Tremendous amount of wastage of time in commuting to our workplace and by the time we reach there we are already tired.
ii. Lack of proper planning. I believe right now the biggest problem of Indian IT industry is lack of efficient middle level management. Any Tom, Dick, and Harry is a project manager just because he is having few years of experience with him. If your manager is not efficient enough to chalk out an effective plan for your project, you will end up putting extra efforts without fetching any benefit.
iii. Lack of resource/tools. In most of the companies right amount of resources/tools are not there. Services companies hardly buy them. Management saves money by not buying them, which is stupid. Because finally they end up paying more in terms of man-power and stressed out employees.
iv. Indian IT industry is a service industry in general terms. In service industry man-month counts, and you are just another person who gives the company 12 man-month at the end of the year. And most of the IT companies bills for more people when they are actually using less in the projects.

owerworking...... created by us only
by surabh on Sep 21, 2006 11:28 AM

we should be very clear that the concept is created by us only (employees)we work long hours as to pretend that we are the only one who cares for organisation.,thus employers think if one can work than why not other.

yes employees are not considered as ''employees''
by Mrinalini Shinde on Sep 21, 2006 11:12 AM

Employess Especially in India are considered as labourers who do not have a life of their own except that at work. this is basically because they are given high volume of work which obviously cannot be done in the stipulated time. Effect : The employees end up spending more time at work compared to the stipulated working hours.

Either they are travelling which obviously means as the expenses are borne by the company they will have to spend all their time giving the company whatever it is that it has spent on you.

Well, as there is large volume of work pending employees rememeber the deadlines of their targets rather than their anniversaries and sometime even their own birthdays and the birthdays of their loved ones.

Its high time we thought about our life and considered work a part of it not Life itself.!

Working hours should be clearly defined and If streched should be duely awarded with.
Companies cannot think they have paid the employee and purchased him rather than paid him for his work. Its high time we gave this a serious thought and got out of the image of a pdegreed punching bag !

Over working
by Arun Dada on Sep 21, 2006 11:01 AM

Dear friends,
I think work with joy is the key to overcome this issue.
and in our country our structures and policies of management does't have any scope to make any job enjoyable because of procrastination.

Many are " Busy with out business" which creates lot of stress. As per my knowledge no person does effective (i.e. value adding) contribution more than 5 to 6 hrs. a day though they are working late evenings and working for 11 to 12 hrs. to misguide the management.

We should look at the time management and maximise value addition. Your work satisfaction is directly proportional to value added by you towards company (society) and in return the value added by company (society) in your life.
