Degrees or work experience?
by Vikas on Dec 26, 2006 10:51 PM

Certainly, nothing can teach you as much as experience do. Almost every highly successful intrepreneur (in Indian as well as abroad) do not have any college degree. Their work was/is their only education. There are exceptions such as 'N R Narayana Murthy' but his success is b'coz the success of the software industry which cannot be compare with the success of the people we call 'the empire builders' like "Ambani","Mittal","Kirloskar".
Dispite the facts that if "Ambani" and "Mittal" would have given a chance would have choosen the easy path of Education-job-a secure career, It is their childhood enviroment which 'forced' them to work and earn, the job option as well not used to be as plenty as today.
Today globalization brought in plenty of job opportunities. The short term professional courses give student a quick glance of their respective field. Life is not as hard as it used to be a decad ago.
To day education and entreprenueral succes both seems to be possible togather. Courses like MBA brings students in direct contact with giant business hoiuses through cmapus placement, which aspiring entreprenuers can make good use of.
We should grab the opportunity at right time/place.

Degrees or work experience?

Basic degree with more job ex is the best option. One should rely more on, on-job trainnings rather than on studies done in a previous courseyears ago because on-job trainning are more goal oriented and leave a lasting learning practical impression on the person.

Degree / Work Exp. - A Good Balance is needed
by Anuj G on Dec 05, 2006 11:40 AM

This is the eternal debate when it comes to Degree V/s Work Experience. I am the best example here. Although I am a graduate from the Hotel Industry, I found out that the work I did before and during my time when I was getting my Degree was what gave me an edge in my Professional Career.

A person might study in the Best Institute and get the best degrees, But what good is that if you have no idea of how to use it. I know of brilliant students who have flopped big time in careers as they couldnt use their knowledge practically. Whereas a person who has experience will be able to survive.

But personally, I beleive that a balance of both is a must. When you are planning to study for a professional course such as MBA, Masters in Engineering, it is always better to actually go get some work ex. under your belt, so that you actually know how your industry works. Only then can you truly appreciate and understand the higher concepts.

Another point, Dont ever stop learning throughout your career. Always keep learning something new. Both in print and in practical work. And see how you can become A 'Narayan Murthy' & 'Dhirubhai Ambani' combined, as there is no limit to your growth.

Degrees or work experience
by Vikas Mehta on Dec 04, 2006 05:05 PM

I would say practical knowledge is ahead from having degrees. practical knowledge includes almost every kind of consequences which can occur while handling a situation.

practical experience give you more tactics of handling a situation, example you can manage a team if you have experience, you can manage it more efficiently if you have more experience.

with a degree teams are not managed, but yes they allow you to understand the direction.

Thanks,
Vikas Mehta

Degree vs Work experience
by himanth on Nov 11, 2006 05:10 PM

As degrees prepares you for the challenges in the outside world and the tools to handle them, work experience gives you the more than one tool to handle the challeneges based on the situation. Corporates definetly would look for people with degrees before employing them, a basic degree becomes the basic qualification, but after that the work experience is what matters, as the challenges and demands in an ever changing situation outside is so huge that a person has to be versatile in using more than one tool to handle situations.

Work experience without a degree is more valuable than a degree without experience. However degree with work experience make a person more worthy.

practical experience and theoritcal knowledge
by ekta.c.thaker on Nov 06, 2006 05:22 PM

First of all to get into any flield theoretical knowledge is a must as that is the base of your knowledge. For example if someone leaves u in the kitchen and ask to cook fried rice u must know the recipe after that only u take any step and then once u read recipe u try to find out new way of doing this make changes. Same way after having theory u can do practical and ofcourse after doing practical u come to know more about the same.Theory is just a coffee, milk and sugar but practical is how u make and how u serve. so as per my view i'll give 40%to theory and 60% to practical

Degrees or work experience

Though degrees give a keen edge of knowledge, the practical side makes you brighter and you can beat anybody if you stick to professionalism and an acumen to learn, learn and learn everyday of your life. I happen to be an M.A., in English and am now an SQL Server-administrator also handling HR/ logistics and FINANCE of an MNC. I can run a loom or metal sponge weaver, run a moulding m/c,repair my car/bike, replace a blown fuse and make electrical connections. I can write programs in SQL/FOXPRO/VB etc..Wide reading and a stickler for details can make your professional life better for you and your company. Approach anyhting with an analytical mind, never waver in your decisions, be not afraid to make a presentation when called upon and u can shine in ANY environment. There is nothing like Knowledge based on on-hands experience to beat your competition. But the 'mantra' is having FAITH in yourself and be ready to experiment by exploring the pros and cons first and then making a decision, with profit for the Organization as Criteria No:1. Am just 50 years YOUNG, and my thirst for learning has not diminished even a bit amid all the travails life can put on you! All the Best

re: education or practical experience?

I strongly believe that education plays a vital role in determining the success or failure of a person.
A firm succeeds because of a collective effort, not by the effort of an individual, eventhough ultimately the major chunk of the company's profit will go to the enterprenuer.

According to me, not only technical skills are required by an enterprenuer, but also management skills. He should learn to keep his employees happy.
If he tries an autocratic approach, then eventhough he is a technical genius, then it is of no use because a single person cannot do everything.
Agreed that Dhirubhai Ambani was not much educated, he started from the root level of business. I have read somewhere that he was working in a foreign country in a petrol pump. With all his limited savings he came back to India. With the money he started selling clothes wandering from house to house.
From there he expanded and expanded untill he reached a point where very few reach.
Please note that because he learnt the basics of business just like an MBA student starts learning from
day one of his college he succeeded.

I think both are equally important.
Degree is a tool to start with but after that your Experience that counts and drives you for success.
