Tax savings
by venkatesh prasad on Nov 14, 2006 05:28 PM

I have read a couple articles on Tax savings instruments and ho wto allocate the same.

I observe that the following are not considered:

1. Tuition Fees - 20000/-

2. Housing Loan Repayment - say 20000/-

Now you are left with 60000/-. If you are employed you would have the following (figures given as approximation):

1. EPF (Employee Provident Fund) - 24000/-
2. Life Insruance - 26000/-
3. Pension Plan (earlier 80ccc) - 10000/-

You see that you are not left with any chunks out of the 1 lac limit.

We see day in and day out articles urging us to put in tax saving instruments. Hope it applies to somebody, well not for me.

The Lockin of PPF is 15 years and that of NSC 6 years. The Bank FD (Tax Saving - a new one)lock in is for 5 years. Hence, the best investment would be for Infrastructure Bonds (issued by ICICI Bank etc) the lock in period of which is only 3 years.

Just wanted to add that deposits to PPF should be made as early as possible in financial year to maximize amount of interest.

PPF returns taxable?
by Naveen on Nov 10, 2006 03:11 PM  | Hide replies

Heard a news that PPF returns might be taxable in future. What does that mean? Assume I open a PPF acct today, will my returns remain non taxable. Whats the probability of it getting taxable. Kindly clarify.
