Thanks for the info. It is not only useful for single women but also married working women who have to work late at their office and end up coming late at home. This is esp. for Mumbai ladies who hv to travel a long distance from office to residence & ultimately it is very late at night.

Safety tips for single women
by Athma on Mar 20, 2006 04:08 PM

Really a great messege. Thanks for taking time to compile and post it at REDIFF. Only one point I'm not comfortable was, about the GUN. I heard from a martial trained as well as from Police force that never take a chance when your opposer is holding a GUN against you. Probably a attack towards the gun point ( That is also wrong per those experts ) and then RUN AWAY would help.

Thanks

Athma

Punishment for rape and molestation
by S. Rajiv on Mar 18, 2006 04:49 PM

If we are to deter rapists and molesters, the punishment has to be equally harsh. It must act as a deterrent. Today's legal procedure in India acts more as an incentive than as a deterrent. Many of our political leaders ,end support to such shady elements to get their 'jobs' done, and , most sadly, the press itself cannot be absolved from such crimes.
Rape must compulsorily draw the punishment of CASTRATION in public, and all such cases must be decided within a fixed time period. Wrong conviction must give equally harsh punishments to the police investigating the case. Molestation must also draw harsh punishment. Women misusing rape and molestation as weapons against their lovers/acquiantances must also be given equally harsh punishments matching Hammurabi's law's.
Hopefully, this will make life better for single women in India.

The article will serve as one of the best gifts to any single woman from a man ( single or double ! lol ) It has elaborated all essential points, a bit less marketably, though ! Great help to womankind. Thanks for a wel-researched piece.

What tripe!!
by Ajit Nathaniel on Mar 18, 2006 07:39 AM

This is a very unprofessional article- especially the part about carrying pepper spray. It is advisable to carry any kind of lethal or non-lethal weapon only if you are trained in its use. If you haven't been trained to use it, it may be used against you.

As for Pepper Spray, I saw one brand available here in Bangalore, and it comes nowhere near the effectiveness of Military Grade CS that is used by Police and SWAT teams abroad.

It is better to take a martial arts class- training in something like Krav-Maga, Akkaido or Kickboxing that have easy to learn techniques and don't require exceptional fitness.

Good work. Would also like to have some pts on sexual harassment- at the workplace and in toher situations. These may be subtle but are still quite alarming nevertheless. Need it for a friend in distress.
