C-section
by Sangeeta on Mar 06, 2006 05:55 PM

Yes, I totally agree that C-section has become the order of the day. It is really important to know why a patient is suggested C-section.

For all the reasons mentioned in the article, it is necessary to go in for C-section, but now-a-days, it has become a trend. I am not sure whether it is always necessary or do the doctors misguide or rather scare the to-be mothers. The emotional words by the doctor that 'it is in the interest of the baby' makes half the people nervous and agree for C-section. For the first time mother and mothers in labour, it becomes more crucial and they readily agree for it.

On the other hand, many mothers also have become very intolerent. If they are not able to withstand the labour pain for sometime, they themselves ask the doctor for C-section. Doctors, though not all, just wait for that magical words and prepare the OT. After all they have to spend less time and earn more.

Thus, in effect, how much ever knowledge one has or how much ever reading one has done during pregnancy, it all depends on how the doctor is able to influence you on whether to go in for C-section or not.

Normal Delivery is becoming extinct
by Rama on Mar 06, 2006 05:13 PM

There are 2 simple reasons for why Nomal delivery is no longer a normal thing. And both of them have to do with doctors:
1. Doing a Normal delivery is tedious and time consuming where as C-Section can be scheduled according to doctor's convenience.
2. Doing a C-Section earns more money.

Many of the reasons that are being offered as contributing towards increase in c-section are flawed. For example,

Reason: increase in birth weight
counter Argument: birth weight in US is comparitively much higher still the percentage of c-sections is very low in US as compared with India.

Reason: Prior C-Sections are the biggest reason for increase in the C-section rate.
Counter Argument: Does this remind of chicken-egg confusion. This is typical of how gynacs fool us. The question to be asked here is why were prior deliveries (the first one) c-section.

Don't forget there is tremendous amount of pain during the first couple of weeks after c-section, hence the oft-repeated line "women are afraid of pain hence opt for c-section" is seriously flawed. Women who opt for c-section afraid of pain are not properly guided as they aren't told about the pain, injections after surgery

Medication of Epidural and Availability in India.
by Rajesh Prayaga on Mar 06, 2006 04:40 PM  | Hide replies

Thankyou all for posting such useful information. My wife is due soon, and our first baby was born in Switzerland. In Switzerland they've taken excellent care during the labor, to make sure it was normal delivery though lengthy they've chosen to use Epidural.

I would like to know, we've opted to have our 2nd baby in Hyderabad, are there any hospitals giving Epidural and what are the best chances that the 2nd delivery will also be normal.

Thanks for answering
Regards
Rajesh Prayaga

Is it true as the doctor mentioned in the article that if the first delivery is a c-section then it may lead to embryo implantation problems in the future pregnancies?

Can somebody please confirm this issue?

I have been trying to conceive for the last 8 months but so far havent been lucky.

Thanks.

Cesarean Section: The Lowdown
by Dr YNI Anand on Mar 06, 2006 04:23 PM

A good article by Dr Roopa Nishi Viswanathan. However, a few points need clarification. Firstly, what happened to those breech deliveries that we conducted during our internship? We were taught that breech presentation is not an indication for cesarean section. Secondly what happened to the teaching, "Once a cesarean, always a hospital delivery"? There are several first cesareans who have delivered normally. Finally, greed and unscrupulousness amongst the doctors is steadily increasing and NOT decreasing despite education of the would be mothers. The worst thing is when the doctor tells the would be mother at the last moment that a cesarean may be indicated and that she would not be responsible if the would be mother does not give her consent for cesarean. No would be mother in her normal senses who has carried the child for nine months and looking for thr joyous moment would dare say "NO". Thus she is blackmailed by the greedy obstetrician. There are several obstetricians with this mindset today, at least in India.
