Got a roommate from hell?
by Dileep on Aug 14, 2006 02:05 PM

Hai Guys/Gals.
I'm Dileep. I've stayed away from home for about 15 years, right from my childhood in hostels and also sharing rooms/flats during my college years. I have a good experience of all this. My sincere advice is to sort out things first itself like the roommates habits, their nature/mentality. Or else it will be a real hell. During my engineering years, for the first three years I stayed with friends and in the final year I took a single room with attached bath room and with a nice balcony. I enjoyed the stay and had my privacy and could do well in my exams....

Cheers,
Dileep

I totally agree with the author.

It happens not only with strangers, it can also happen with your friends. The worst part is that you have a great risk of losing your friendship.

It is always better to stay alone or atleast in a seperate bed room if you take up to share the house.

For 3 years of my graduation I stayed with Roommates and we used to have helluva fun and I miss those days. But in my final year I decided to stay alone. Now I could study without anyone even trying to disturb me or tempt me to indulge in useless chatter. I didnt have to wait for someone to get out of the bathroom and that saved a lot of time. I got time to think and plan which I never got when I stayed with roommates as we used to indulge in useless chatter in our free time. I did quite well in my final year exams.

Roomies
by Shilpa on Jun 21, 2006 08:59 AM

I have just left my acco to go back to parents. I was staying away so that I could save commuting time and manage to study for exams. But I realised that I was not getting enuf space to study. So I quit-never mind the commute, I'll atleast get things my way at home. But sincerely, this is the first time I am having to take such a stand. I have had roomies in college hostel and even while I was working away but never faced this situation. I think it is better to have rommies who share your thinking and are possibly from your own educational/professional background.

My roommate n Me
by Vishnu on Jun 20, 2006 05:09 PM

I came here to Germany to work. I shared my room with my colleague who is also an Indian. He measures everythin in terms of money.. very dominant and no more jolly life. Its better if u observe his nature before sharing ur room with others.

It was one wonderful experience in a bachelor life when you manage to run the house alone with nobody to advise you on how to do things. Luckily for me all my roommates were nice people, worth remembering for their cool and funny characters. I did savour every moment of the life in a flat in chennai, the eternal struggles to beat time and be there at home when water is opened for us to store, the effective bargaining and talking we had to do to let our landlord accede to our requests. On the whole it was an unforgettable experience and last but not the least, the room mates were wonderful people as well. Now that am abroad again in a shared private apartment , happy to be the main contact person for the house arranging for everything in the house including the cleaning schedules. Though nothing can be compared to the life at our own home along with parents and family, sharing an apartment / room is a wonderful experience in itself as well.

Please add one more thing: Win the arguement and lose the person. Never argue over petty issues. It is all give and take. If the other guy does not respond in the same spirited way you do, just leave him alone, May be, he /she needs time.

Every person has its own experinces....When you you got a gud roomi...its heaven for you n if its not your type...nothing is compareable with that hell...I ahev been always lucky to have good roomamates...I guess there are some tips...
1)Respect your roomates privacy n give him/her space....
2)dont peep up at his/her things n expessions...after all v r citizens of independent india n v have freedom of expession of our thoughts...
3)make money matters very clear...frindship is diffrent from money n most of the relations went bad when money comes in between...
4)keep your area clean..that will give him/her signal to clean his/her area too...
5)make note of all commen expenses....n tell it on time...to your roomi
6)MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS....
7)PUT SMILE ON YOUR FACE IN WORST CONDITIONS...
8)CLOSE THE ISSUES WHEN DISCUSSED..DONT DRAG THEM IN NEXT FIGHT....
i think thats what my experince says...
Have a nice stay with your rommi....
