Yes its a fact & truth from hotel industry coz owners of hotel wants more money from business but not to spend more for staff b'coz of them hotel is running.
they never think about that only looking there staff like "ALL GADHE COMES IN HOTEL AND DO GADHE MAJURI FOR THEIR OWNER"

I totally agree with the author, im currently goin thru training at a reputed 5 star hotel in bandra having done the same course, it all looks very goody goody frm outside but we know what happens on the inside...we trainees have to slog like crazy, each one wants to just exploit u in whatever way they can. Working in a hotel is tough, no social life of any kind and then get paid peanuts. Wudnt advise anybody to get into the hotel industry coz its just not worth it.

It is nice to see that someone did bother to write about the dredgery the younger generation goes through to make a life in the hotel industry. A backbreaking non paying 12 hrs of making pasteries is only the tip of the iceberg. Think about double shifts of peeling piles of onions these trainees go through for a trainee certificate.

Hotel Management Graduates are slaves, exploited at will by everybody
by Nitesh Mehta on Jul 26, 2006 08:08 PM

Dear Rashmi,

I agree with your article absolutely 200%. I had completed graduation in Hotel Management & cursing the day I got enrolled in that course till now & maybe for my whole life. After spending so many lakhs for the course, I did not even get peanuts salary which an 10th pass could make.

We were exploited like hell, working in slavery conditions for 16 to 36 hours continuously without getting weekly offs. I am still amazed by the management of hotel & restaurants that how can they recruit such low number of staff for so many guests.

One has to take workload of 3 to 4 persons & keep everyone happy from seniors to guests. We were always told to smile even when our heart was bleeding. There was no sympathy to any staff persons who got ill, he still had to slug it out in unbearable conditions.

Each hotel & restaurant has about more than 500% profit margin & daily sales of lakhs of Rupees. Still they don't want to pay their staff even 1% of this huge share of income. More than 70% staff even don't earn minimum wages approved by the Indian govt.

My advice to each person is simple: don't join any hotel/restaurant even if you are left with no choices in your career.

five star career

pehraps i'd like a rejoinder to ur article. when these HM guys teel their folks n peers that they landed up in a hotel, those people would think that this guy might be earning a gud sum. this is what people think. i myself have been in this industry for an year, and i was getting 5k, and it would be an embarrasing situation to break people's perception. see, the problem is not that what you're getting, but what will you get. and the prospects are not bright there, certainly. and i moved on, now into copywriting.

salaries:only IT/commerce: do they deserve it really?
by bijayraj on Jul 26, 2006 05:50 PM

it true.today,if u wish to make money,be either:a software engineer, some great commerce guru, showbiz,or,of course,a politician.plz dont be a nurse, cook or least of all a doctor. u know what doctors are paid? 10-12 k at the most after 5 years of gruelling MBBS,for 12 hour shifts without leave.nurses get 4-8 k..thats if they re lucky. saving peoples lives has got obviously much value today. 7 star jobs,1//2-star salaries, end up in frustration.

5-Star Careers, Third Rate Salary
by Dr Y N I Anand on Jul 26, 2006 03:39 PM

My nephew ran away after a mere one and half years in this country, to a more hospitable place. Over the last three years he has been regularly hunting for better pasteurs and has already saved over 300K. No wonder, Hospitality Industry in this country is one of the most inhospitable industries for some of those who work there.
