Hi,
The distance to Coorg from Bangalore is around 260kms. If you are driving you can take a right turn (almost a U turn) after Srirangapatana town (immediately after the bridge). Then you can go via Kushal Nagar, to Madikeri. The Roads were (We went during September2006 end) pretty okay.

Paradise on earth : Part III

Local People are brave ... Coorg has given birth to many warriors and even today many coorgis are in Military service ...
Visited places like Tal Cauvery ( A origin or river cauvery, a major river in south India), this is another spectacular place ... A temple in Baghmandala... Visited few villages nearby to the places of my friend's relative ... enjoyed a natural coorg in every way ...
If Nature is "Amrit" for you, then Coorg is river of Amrit for you ... There are many beuatiful places in India, Madikeri is one of them ...
-----
I had a chance to visit Madikeri for second time in 2003 before I moved to Pune in 2004...I visited Orange country resort ... in Siddapur in Coorg... but more on that in next article... have plans to Visit Mysore and Nagarhole this winter again ....
Bye See ya ...Folks

Paradise on earth : Part II
by Ajeet on Aug 29, 2006 10:42 AM

I began my journey from Madikeri to Baghmandala ...
I sat in the bus next to driver to get the full view ...
I was so much excited to see the beauty of this place, I realized that two eyes are not enough to see the beauty of some places this world and especially this country has to offer ... It is rightly said ..."Saare Jahan se Accha Hindustan hamara ..."
Swinging through ghats enjoying the nature, huts along the ghats, coffee plantations ( Haa ...I still remember the smell of coffee plantations ....) We reached chettimani ( 7 Kilometers before Baghmandala) and had to take a long road by walk to the isolated house in the farm that was surrounded by teak woods, coffee and cardmom plantation ...
There was stream of natural water flowing from the mountain top and passed through the back of house and river in the valley that joined Cauvery few miles away ... misty clouds reducing your visibility and wild animals and sweet chirping music of Birds ... No imagination can match or describe this beauty of reality ...The occasion that I had been for "Huttari" show how rich and diversified our culture is ...and the local people ...They are the brave but very kind ...Watch my Part III

Paradise on Earth

One thing I can assure you ... sun will rise in the east and Nature lovers are going to love their heart out ...
I am from Pune but was brought up in Bangalore and had couple of friends from Coorg ...Having travelled hundreds of times between bangalore & mysore, I took this time to nap ...so that I could stay awake from mysore to Madikeri ... to feel the nature around. I & my friend Prasanna, got down at mysore, went to his sisters place in mysore and had lunch before begun our next journey. A half and hour drive from mysore, takes you in the lap of the nature..a jungle and we were lucky to wild elephants on the road couple of time ...!!! Dont envy me as yet, best is ahead.
Crossing the typical Indian (Kannada) villages/towns of hunsur, periyapatna, Kushalnagar we reached Coorg at 4:00 PM.It was December of 1998, and it was cold at 4:00 PM in Madikeri !!!
We had to reach Erappa's village further, near Baghmandala about 40 KMS in Madikeri. We took further KSRTC bus ( my trip was not planned one but deliberate adhoc trip to enjoy the aroma of coorg in its wild and original form).
I am continuing the message ...
Read my next sequel if it allows me to post message twice ... See ya

Misty days in Coorg
by Somnath on Aug 23, 2006 02:24 AM

Me & my wife had been to Madikeri (Coorg) last week during the Indepence Day long weekend. It was indeed a rare holiday experience as it was our first visit to coorg. I must say that coorg is really magical in the monsoon & probably the best time to enjoy it most. On top of the list of places mentioned here it is not a bad idea to visit the Dubare Elephant Training Camp & Bylapkuppe Tibetan settlement . Also for first timers try to get accomodation at home stay(private guest houses in coffee estates). It will be a different experience compared to traditional hotels.

Thanks,
Somnath

Auli/Joshimath/Badrinath
by Salim Kidwai on Aug 09, 2006 12:43 PM

We 3 friends were meeting together after nearly 7 years and decided to visit someplace away from Delhi's hustle-bustle and spend some quality time together.

We took overnight deluxe bus to Rishikesh - 250 kms
Then a GMOU- Garhwal Mountain Operators Union mini-bus to Joshimath - 350 Kms starting at 5 AM. This seemed a ardous 12 hrs journey in the begining, but seemed enjoyable as the day wentby.

We passed thru the Gopeshwar, Rudraprayag, karnprayag, River Bhagirathi in all its force, Gaumukh - supposedly where the Ganges originates, Kedarnath, etc...

The people seemed friendly and food was good. Aloo, Gobi, paneer paranthas seemed the most common cuisine.

We reached Joshimath in the evning arnd 5 PM and checked into Kamet lodge. It is a 1 star wooden lodge on the upper mall, but, very clean and has all amenities. We went out for some Veg. food in the evening.

Next morning we went to Auli, which is 5 kms uphill and the only Winter-ski resort in UP, its run by GMVN. Its quite beautiful and has swiss cottages.

Next morning we trekked all the way to Kuari peak, about 5000 ft. above sealevel. this is a 3 day trek and is really beautiful.

Coorg - The Scotland of India
by venkat on Jul 19, 2006 11:29 AM

For budget travellers, Coorg is 4 hours by bus from Mangalore and 2 hours from Mysore. There are buses to Madikeri every 15 mins or so.

There are also other spots like Gaddige, which looks like a cross between an Islaic style tomb and a Shiva temple.

One another spot is Nisargadhama, where one can go on an elephant ride.

Dubare is an elephant sanctuary, where if one goes in the morning, they display elephant training techniques.
