truly said such kind of inflated salary draws up a large no. of students thinking MBA as one ticket for rosy island. but the things are not that preety. i know a no. of my pals who are earning 6lacs, 7lacs pa but are getting paltry in hand. This is not the case in gov. services where the basic salary which though looks paltry but if one includes all other enoulements the figure is quite impressive.i think one solution would be to differentiate the ctc on the basis of cash in hand and other enoulements and let the basic salary(cash in hand) be the real figure and the comission etc earned should not form a part of that.

Some sense among all non-sense!

I am glad the auhor wrote this peice when the admission season is about to begin at the B-Schools, with a lot of propective students nurturing dreams of those astronomical packages quoted in newspapers!
For those who think they will do good to get more info on this subject, here are my two pieces of info -
1)a more relevant figure to compare among B-Schools is the "median salary" as it indicates what is the salary receieved by an average student - and exlcudes the contamination by outliers.
2)always ask the question -average batch salary figure is average of Indian salary or average of Indian salary plus rupee converted dollar/pound salaries? pure indian salaries is a better reflection.
3)if you can, ask the question..whats the average take-home cash in hand - and believe me, its usually between 27-40K (tilt toward lower 30s) in first year of job - thats just abt 3.5-4.8lakhs p.a!not 8 lakhs!
4)Also, try and check salaries across sectors, as Mktg salaries will be different from consulting/banking.
5)And last..its the institute and quality of education that matters - not the starting package, as once in industry, you create your own destiny irrespective of starting pay!

True indeed
by Rohit Chauhan on Jan 12, 2006 09:54 PM

It's indeed true that institutes exaggarate. And it's not just about CTC. Last year a well known institute quoted as placements getting over in 6 hours and some 53 companies visiting the campus. Some pieces that come out of these bschools are not exaggarations, they are simply lies.

But at the macro level, how will it matter if the average salary of an institute is 5.4 or 5.9? I feel it's just media hype which gives a kick to the MBA aspirants and thus the bschools join the lie bandwagon, trying to compete with the other culprits in the game.
