faking resumes
by satya on Apr 19, 2006 01:50 PM  | Hide replies

'Faking resumes'has been in the news recently. Well, on the face of it, faking resumes is unethical and needs to be punished. HR heads have been upset and vocal about the phenomenon and compnaies are now looking to set up systems to detect 'resume faking'. one issue that has not been discussed in detail is why would a candidate fake his resume? what makes a person do something unethical and unprofessional? Sadly, one important reason for faking resume is; companies hiring employees are often plain lazy and do have processes to judge the suitablity and calibre of a candidate. They go by old, tried and tested formula of experience and qualification. Suppose you passed out 15 years back from a business school, how relevant is that degree in today's world. Employers sadly do not attach weightage to achievements like 'contributing to industry journals and business magazines', winning quiz, working as a team player etc. So what happens; you have the right mindset and skill set for a job, you are updated on 'current thinking and ideas' pertaining to yuor field of work, yet the compnay would choose someone who has expereince and qualifications.

I have many reasons to tell why people fake their Resumes. Its not that bad. My friend who was BE-Mechanical got through campus interview with one of the mechanical companies even before result were out.
He worked there for a year but quality of work was not good. Then he decided to move to IT. and so he did some good courses and looked for job. But every employer asked for the exp. Also changing the industry was considered a bad thing. So he faked his Resume and got job.
Why not to tell the employers to recruit the people on attitude and ability and not just on Qualification and experience.?

Truth is infinite times more powerful than lie
by Dr. Ashish Manohar Urkude on Apr 18, 2006 12:35 PM

Excellent Article. A Truth is always more powerful than lie. Many jobs are not offered to the best Resumes but to best candidates. Thats all I can say. People do not want glamour they want their job to be done at the end of the day. Today people are more practical than going behind the glamorous resumes.
Few more such articles can really make people to speak truth nothng but truth.
Thanks for highligting a big problem due to which I lost many best positions due to my "Truthful" behaviour. Infact more the transperant more should be that person and organisation rich. People do not like hidden agenda of the company and falsehood.By the time truth is out many get duped.
Once it happened to me. I was the only PhD candidate in the Professor's cadre to be interviewed. However, 'few more' came as they were about to get PhD. Later on the Director found that they did not even submitted their PhD Thesis. So he called me after few more days. But, I take the words,"We'll call you later"as rejection.Hence,I said, "No".Thus, that institute still never got a PhD candidate as their Professor. Thus, even interviewers need to be trained at his front.

See other side also

To get a job now a day is not just your qualification but it is totaly a marketing oneself ,and in marketting there is some hidden things HR manager should know it very well.So you can not say that lying in resume is fully bad.If you are writing in job posting that candidate should be form reputed institute (i.e Having high market value)then the candidate who is not from your so called reputed institute find the job without lying.

Please see the other side also.

Dear sir,

Please kindly advise me on the following

My friend was been dismmissed from the services 5 years back stating the reason that he have leaked the company secrets to the competitor and was unable to prove it by the Management rep during the enquiry.

The MR due to some politics he suspended my frend from job for 2 years and after 2 years he hold the enquiry to satisfy the managment that his decison was correct with false evidences.

My friend he is a poor man and was shocked about mgt.decison and his future was spoiled. He is a poor felow and dont want to sue the company he is the bread winner of the family. He went to pillar to post and searched a job where he was given 50% of the last company salary .He feel that since he has not received the service certificate for the dismissed employer he was been servedlike that and his mind is at a mess whatto do.

Whether he has to file the case or

compormise with the existing status

or

Explain the whole thing during an interview so taht he may or may not get job.

Please advise

Advice is good...but..
by Jayavardhan M on Apr 17, 2006 04:42 PM

As you mentioned some people who do not lie in resumes also are losing jobs. I have some friends who fall in this category. But you did not give probable reasons etc for this. Is this because the employers lack knowledge of facts etc..or what?

verification can not guarantee everything
by Rajsekhar on Apr 17, 2006 03:56 PM

Software industry is fake industry. There is no doubt on it. This is because as a fresher it is difficult to get an entry in IT industry. So people are giving fake experiences to get interview calls. Though companies are doing background checks it is of no use. This is because fake guys are working there. Even background checks can not do anything. I know people who are working in top MNC. But they are fake. Even they passed in background check. So, why the company is wasting so much money for this check. It does not guarantee that the person is genuine if he is passed in verification. The fake guys are doing some set up and are cleard by verification process.

Who is honest
by honest on Apr 17, 2006 02:33 PM

Since last month so many news papers and websites created hype . But what is the truth and who is the honest? it is easy to blame candidates who are seeking the jobs, but no body wants to understand the real problem.
1. No body wants to entertain the freshers even they are more bright and capable then the some of the existing experiance employee. Every company need experiance and for experiance candidate need job.

2. Company wants to break the candidate from the other organization and they do what ever they can in getting them.

3. This is the most important thing to note that many service organization fake themself the cv of candidates to present their customers and to show the skill set revelent to the customer need for getting the project. and in terms of the manager and orgnization is nothing againest the ethics...it is just business. Then tell me Who is the honest.
, whether the companies are doing right thing to get the business?

Moral of the story is ..if you check 1000 CV in any organization to serve other organization , you will find atlest 50-60 % fake experiance shown by that comapany to their cliants.
Then find out who is the honest
