Teenagers glued to TV
by A.H. Venkatachalam on Apr 02, 2005 05:34 AM

Cricket does as much harm as liquour does to an alcoholic though Cricket is a boring game. Intelligent teen agers glued to the TV are the worst affected as Cricket makes them dull.

cricket during exams
by sudhir on Apr 01, 2005 01:40 PM

Dear Sir,
I am in total agreement with Mr. Subir Roy. No cricket series should be planned during exams whatsoever. A series against Pakistan during this time was infact, I would term it as 'criminal'. It is high time that BCCI should wake up to the more responsible attitude rather than providing all Indians the 'thrill' any time they feel like. They and the people who mattered in finalizing the series should appreciate that our children are future of our country and they have no right to play with the future of our children and the country in turn at any cost. children ,in all probability, are not willing to listen to your advice(when cricket unfortunately has become the passion and the religion for most of us) not to watch the matches especially when test match being played like 'one day' even during their exams. It is only easier said than done. I therefore earnestly request them to take a serious note of it before they plan a cricket series.
Thanks

Matches and exams
by Nitya on Mar 31, 2005 06:30 PM

I think some exam will be conducted almost everyday of the year. so a cricket or any other match shouldnt hamper anyone's preparations. people should have control on themselves and realise what is good for them. these days the result of a match can be seen on the internet, newspapers, magazines, with pictures. we can find out the score whenever we take a break. but sometimes it gets difficult to concentrate when a match has becomes interesting.
But cricket has to be played and exams have to be done. we need to have a good balance between studies and extra things and have our priorities set right.

Cricket matches during exams?
by CP Venkatesan on Mar 31, 2005 03:43 PM

It is a fate that we cannot escape from this tragedy like accepting Indian politicians.Cricket test matches and one day matches are played from October to March during which time all school/college exams are conducted. Cricket Control Board decides the dates. There is nobody to put pressure to change the schedule. Even the top political leaders in the rank of PM, CM are invited or they themselves spend their time watching Cricket play. Mostly in all government offices, nationalised banks, Insurance companies, they waste their time watching/discussing about the play. Millions of man hours are lost. Nobody is bothered about it. The school children are no escape to this situation. They waste about 40-50 days by watching cricketing matches.

The best way is to stop telecasting the matches in TVs. Only highlights should be shown in the evenings.Several countries do not encourage the long hours, days and months game into their habit. Though the game is interesting one but should not be allowed like this to continue which will have adverse effect in our country's properrity particularly school/college going students.

Matches at the time of exams
by YUSUF on Mar 31, 2005 03:14 PM

Recently in dubai where i stay i met a taxi driver from pakistan. And he was cursing cricket. After discussing with him i found out he wasted his life for cricket as he had only 2 options as to go to the college when he was young or to play cricket and work. So he choosed the later.
And he was rushing back home to pakistan as this series had started and his elder son was in 10th std and he never wanted his son to be the same as he is.
So in my view this Matches should be in vactions.

solutions ?
by art on Mar 31, 2005 02:40 PM

Can anybody tell me what *good* time matches must be scheduled ?
As far I know may-june is also occupied by engineering exams also nov-dec too..We can not arrange matches in rainy days which means july-august is also lost..
So we have very few choices ..
This is a very complex question and I am facing it from my childhood..
But When I look back..We should not blame BCCI only..they are N no. of people having 'N" problems and 'N*N' solutions we can not arrive at a single solution..
Best way will be "highlights" and if kid want to see match in any case u can let s/he to watch only critical part of the match..and also keep him/her updated about scores..believe me that won't make kid unhappy..and u'll definately see improvement in his/her studies..Afterall I went through all this..
and my dad used to tell me score at regular time ans also allowed me to watch some interesting part of the match.
Of course this is just a suggestion..!!!

Well written article + exams?!!
by Ganesh Iyer on Mar 31, 2005 02:27 PM

Great article!
It is truly an apt description of the home situation, since time immemorial ( read my school-days, twenty years back! ). The only diff. being it was radio those days, and aajkal it is the TV box!
One thing in favour of the radio : One could continue studying ( or pretend so! ) while listening to the radio!
with TV, one has to be all eyes and ears and also gets fatigued!
An amicable solution to Mr. Roy's problem : Let his daughter agree to study and he should agree to the commentary being on, albeit in a low volume and she should be given 5 minute breaks, when an important milestone is reached. e.g. a wicket falls or a batsman gets to a landmark!
Of course, AIR also needs to help by bringing back the old standards of commentary : a la Anant Setalvad, Sushil Doshi and all the pre-1970s commentators + also get rid of the 'disconnecting India' fours and sixes adverts.!
JAI HO! Khel mein bhi aur school/college padhai aur pariksha mein bhi!
ganesh iyer, Chennai.

Cricket during exams
by Lt Col M Shrinivas on Mar 31, 2005 01:57 PM

Dear Sir

I entirely agree that no cricket series should be held during Board Exams. In recent years most of the important series coincided with Board Exam. This adversely affects the performance of not only boys but alos girls. It is very difficult to resist the tmeptation of seeing/listening the commentary even for adults what to talk of children.I therefore request those repsonsible to finalise the series to have important series in India during September-November wherever possible. Only overseas series where matches are held when it is night or no telecast should be planned during exam time.

Lt Col M Shrinivas, Noida.
