my husband is suffering from chicken pox. I was with him in close contact before diagnosis. i am having running nose, bodyaches, low fever. should i take the vaccine immediately? is there still chances of my having pox?
Reply to my recent query related to adults that have had chickenpox in their early days and get striken by Herpes Zoster infection later on , and hence finding themselves outside the vaccination route,is still awaited. M.R.Srinivasan
Herpes Zoster is more common in immunocompromised states such as AIDS, long term steroid therapy, and chemotherapy for cancer. It is generally treated with the Acyclovir group of antiviral drugs. Treatment usually continues for 7 days. It is not wise to self-diagnose or treat this disease. Other drugs given may be analgesics for the pain, steroids for prevention of nerve damage and antiviral plus steroid eye medications if the eye is affected.Antiviral drugs are usually expensive.
Good article. However, the doctor has not mentioned one of the fall-outs of chicken pox in later years. People who have had chicken-pox can get "Shingles", which is very painful. This generally happens at an age of 45 - 50 +.
My mom (53), came to visit me in singapore, and got shingles....and that is the first time i had ever heard of it. People in india say "once u have chicken-pox, it wont happen again..". Probably true, but this can lead to Shingles. Best option...vaccination against Chicken Pox...if you have not had Chicken Pox....Could the doctor elaborate further pls.
In the case of those that cannot opt for vaccination, especially adults who have had chicken-pox in their childhood, medication will be about the only course to cope with the condition.A general mention regarding the regimen may have been helpful in the management of Herpes Zoster in adults--of course, under medical supervision only. Is there a way it can be included under today's topic?
