leaking roof
by ASHOK MAHANT on Oct 03, 2005 11:05 AM

The roof of my row house started leaking during the current monsoon. What is the most economic remedy for this. Some one suggested use of TARPOL. Is it safe? Please reply.

Hi

Since you do not want to spend money on rectifying the problem, there is one low cost remedy. You can use tiles on the wall...cheap ones..and paint over the tiles. This will stop the seepage and dampness. You can use the uneven slate tiles which are not only cheap but give an uneven texture to the walls. This of course does not fix your problem 'inside' the wall ..which requires some work..but will not show on the outside and your paint peeling off problem is well taken care of.

Dampwalls
by Sumathi on Aug 24, 2005 12:30 PM

Dear Ms Rekha,
I have a house in Hyderabad, which is constructed by the government in 1964. It had chunam walls. The walls are 14". The foundation is very strong. I removed that and got cement plastering done after 35 years.

But, the walls become very damp in monsoon season and look very ugly and even the paint gets peeled off too.
I used the best paint for the walls and gave 2-3 coatings. Still, the problem persists. Some murky smell comes which I feel is not good for health.

The dampness is shown even after drying in summer too.
It is not constructed on pillar as there was system of pillar construction 40 years back.

Please give me some advise regarding this.
I will be very greatful to you.

Should I dismantle the house and do new construction. Or, give it for development? As it is already an old house I do not want to invest too much money on it.

Please give my reply.

Sumathi
