what todays managers need is not einstien type abilities to crack super math problems. its not all abt IQ is it ? there should be greater emphasis on EQ so that the true entrepreneurs are filtered from those who can tell whats 34X65 in a sec

You are absolutely right Ravi! There are many people who could become management gurus someday, only if given the chance. IIMs are missing out on many of them.

Regarding CAT

I do agree that CAT aspirants need all-round skills to crack this test-which enables them to get into the best B-Schools.But CAT is becoming more n more sophisticated n of the type which require typical engg skills.Something shud definitely be done about this n respected paper setters shud set papers bearing this in mind that brilliant ambitious students exist in all streams n they need opportunities like CAT to prove themselves more....

yes,
i absolutely agree with what shweta tomar has to say about the CAT exam.Irrespective of what the educationists and the coaching institutes say, CAT is definitely the exam for engineers and more so for students from IITs,REC's and other premier engineering colleges. What with even the latest edition of Business World says that chances of a person's getting into IIMs is very less if he is not the school/college topper types or doesnot belong to the premier engineering colleges. It is a more serious issue than even cracking the CAT exam.

hi,
i beg to differ here..there's an important difference between GMAT and CAT..u can take cat as many times as u want..it is not viewed negatively..but u can't take GMAT that way.. most us schools view a repeat attempt negatively.. so what if u lost a year because of unfortunate circumstances, u cud get thru the following year or the year after that..if u consider the average age of the people getting into a us b-school(around 28 years because of the application of the workex criteria) and assuming that u start taking cat at the age of 22, u can take 6 attempts more to get into an iim rather than a us b-school:-).. am sure the unfortunate circumstances would not repeat in each of those six occasions..so i think, cat gives you more time and flexibility than GMAT..

CAT is not possible.
by Vinayak Joshi on Sep 26, 2004 10:54 AM  | Hide replies

"Nothig comes out free in this world"- hardlining this message, we can think about CAT in the following ways.CAT is a bit tough when compared to GMAT or MAT. But, it is not so tough, if you work hard. It's our mind set or attitude that really matters. How we prepare for exam or how we attempt the exam. I think if you have good schooling with strong arithmetic foundation and good vocabulary, there shouldn't be any problem in winnig this "hard rock".

CAT is a balanced test....which requires just ur basics (that too studied in 9th - 10th std) very much firm.....theres nothing related to engineering or biased to any stream.....it covers the very basic foundation of all....I hope anyone who has passed out from any damn (not vernacular) school should not find it difficult. For vernacs they need to be good in english in order to communicate with global managers and leaders.....hope its not too asking.....moreover every person gets a fair chance to participate in this test as the pattern type is known and sample papers and prev year papers are readily available....ONLY SERIOUS ASPIRANT WITH REAL ABILITIES CAN CRACK IT AND MAKE TO IIM, THOSE WHO CANT CANNOT CRACK IT AND HENCE FIND WAYS TO IMPLICATE FALSE CLAIMS.....I have great respect for people who crack it till IIM!....kudos to all iims people....

CAT: A reality check

maybe it might not be that tough to crack CAT. but there is a crucial difference altough it is being described as "simple test" it is not as simple as it has been described. i have attempted CAT twice in 1999 and 2000 and both the times questions in quantative ability were far tougher and incomprehensible for non engineering graduates. may be its time for IIMs to advertise that only engineers are eligible to write CAT and not the students for other streams.

Hey kashyap,
I think you are some what dissappointed with CAT. Don't worry, it's simple. Try hard till you get it. Nothing is impossible.
Being software professional, I'll tell you one thing, Whether y ou are an engineer or a batchelor degree holder in any descipline, it matters very little. It depends on how quickly you think and work out the problem in CAT. It's just 8th standard maths man... So there shouldn't be any problem.
