MBA caste-system-do we need this comparison
by Khanna on Sep 10, 2006 10:24 PM  | Hide replies

Do we really need this sort of comparison in today's world? The writer seems to be existing in a previous century. Would she write about MBA color-system in the USA? I doubt it. Pl elevate your writings, Ms. Bansal with a more acceptable and relevant analogy-the real 'warriors' are todays SC/STs (if we must make such an analogy at all) who have battled against all odds to reach the top of their chosen fields and are still battling against parochial & prejudiced views like yours. Your otherwise informative articles are marred by this unfortunate tendency of yours to see everything wearing caste-tinted glasses. At best you will lose readership. But I do hope you will wake up & smell the coffee.

evene the sc /st gete better paid jobs once they have IIM brand . This shows two things either the exam patters in IIM is to create supply demand gap so that donkeys too sell in price of horses 2) IIM is a place where after 4 years of engineering you get time to chill out . Preparing assignments is Not academic pressure. Infact Night time is the most chill out time in IIM campuses . I have aksed 8 pointers at IIT they said family constraints and the Burden of Loan has kept them away from applying to US . They also said with a Harvard we dont have an Life long assurity of Career in US BUT with an IIM degree in India any Duffer will make it big in Indian industry . Coz In India the Syndicate is a BIG Thing. If you are part of that for rest of Life it is assured promotion ,Job Security and fat bonuses for which they didn't go to US . But this they said within us colleagues while drunk :)

MBA caste system

The writer perpetuates the caste-system analogy in several articles (also see 'Is the IIM brand invincible?' where she talks about B-schools in caste equations - brahmins, vaishyas & ksatriyas & conveniently omitting Shudras). Disappointing in an IIM-A graduate - whom we expect to make positive contributions to society esp. when her education is subsidised at the expense of the tax-payers' money - a poor ROI for the SC/ST taxpayers it would seem!

Rahmi's article - MBA Caste System
by S Khanna on Sep 10, 2006 08:08 PM

Good writing, but let's get over the 'caste system' & its refrences, shall we? In the US, you wouldn't write about the 'MBA color-factor' so dont abuse your freeedom of speech.

MBA Castes

Dear Ms Rashmi,

The issue does not need debate for following reasons:

1. The corporates are moneywise and will put money only where mouth is. And double check that where they are putting the money is mouth and mouth only and nothing but the mouth.

2. In this world of "BAAP BADA NA BHAIYA, SABSE BADA RUPAIYA" where is the question of profoundly unjustified alma mater bias (a little will always be there)?

3. Alumni network (or lack of it) can affect a fresh MBA entrant only for the first few years. There after, it is your performance record which will speak for him mostly. So, it is not much of an issue. One of my collegues who passed out from an ordinary Engg college and did his MBA through correspondence, was recently head hunted by one of the fortune 500 companies and is today rubbing shouders with IIM A grads of similar seniority.

So why enter into a needless debate

Birth or Deed.

I disagree with the author in comparing the Corporate Preference with Caste System. Caste System was based on birth and not deeds.

As we all know that only the best can crack IIT and CAT. For getting into such indtitutes takes tonnes of labour, intelligence & effort. And that is why they are recognised. I belive they do deserve the prefernce from the corporates.

looking at the other side of the coin we have seen Non IIT Non IIM grads making big name, fame and money in this same industry. Its all about efforts and not just the Brand

Hi Myu,
I think that rashmi can do this comparison because the cast system was based on the work you did, when it started and later it got spoilt and now you are true it is based on birth.
