Independent candiadates have always been considered as SPOILERS and electing them to the Parliament is of no use.they can not form their own Govt and push for their agenda( if at all they have any agenda). Capt Gopinath of Deccan Air contested against Anant Kumar of BJP but he could garner only about 2000 Votes out of nearly 10 lacs votes!. What purpose did it serve? It was only a publicity stunt or a mad belief that people will pin their hopes on him to turn-around things.In Dakshina Kannada Constituency in karnatak( Remember the ill-famous Pub Attack case?) where an Independent candidate by name U Ram Bhat( an RSS ideaologe) contested against RSS Nominated official BJP Candidate MR nalin Kumar and he got about 5000 Votes. It is well known fact that Mr ram bhat's toal election expenses bill was picked up by Congress party to ensure taht Ram Bhat will split BJP votes which will help Congress, but that did not happen.Ms Sanyal of ABN AMRO bank, Ms Mallika sarabhai etc etc did try their luck but failed.The lesson here for one and all is :
