Sashi Tharoor
by nrk menon on May 19, 2009 09:08 PM

Sheela Bhatt has misread Thiruvananthapuram constituency. The American PhD has won it with charisma. The London born Tharoor learnt Malayalam in record time. He spoke mother tongue with Boston accent, but won the hearts of Trivandrum.

Plea to Congress/Secular party Pls do not divide nation further
by Kamadhenu on May 18, 2009 08:44 PM  | Hide replies

On religion language north-south basis
Latest in the series of controversies centred on the Congress party’s fixation with Muslim grievances is the data collection exercise involving the Indian Armed Forces.
It is irrelevant and mischievous to mention about caste-based divisions in the Army during the British rule.
Congress leaders not only divided the country politically but also militarily. The military officers and men of pre-independence India , belonging to all communities fought the WWII together under the British.

Pakistan got a ready-made army at its birth. When Indian Muslims got Pakistan they also got a Muslim army carved out of the undivided Indian Army. This army produced Pakistani generals and officers who fought wars with India — the first full scale war being in 1965. This is history in living memory.

The Congress party having divided and ruled the country for decades is continuing with its dangerous game and monstrous thinking of doing a head count for the Army now.

mulayam, maya, lalu, paswan all gone.

Congress is NOT bent on dividing any more.
They have seen the political danger of divisive ideology - BJP has gone from potential winner to shocking loser just because of trying to incite hatred.

BJP better start cleaning their heads by reading some Hindu spiritual books and **applying to themselves** or else they will go below 100 seats next time.

Entirely concur!!!
Indian English is a brand of its own now. The absence of any semblence of grammatical correctness makes one wonder what kind of English they teach in schools and colleges nowadaays.

I think the time has come to see the individual against the party. The party will be moulded in the course of time.

Tampering EVM
by Suvendu Huddar on May 18, 2009 07:23 PM  | Hide replies

Producing doctored EVMs is child’s play: Computer chips that control the EVMs can be easily programmed to do all kinds of improper manipulations. For example, after a certain number of people (perhaps hundreds) have voted, the rest of the votes may be channeled to a chosen candidate. This is just one among many mischievous tricks possible. This kind of wrongdoing cannot be detected by the polling agents of candidates. It will take hundreds of votes, for which the presiding officers or polling officers are not likely to have the time or patience to monitor. Control-units keep track of votes by recognising them only by their serial number on the list of candidates on the poll-units on which people vote. So any tampering of the control-unit chip has to be done only after the serial number of various candidates in the list of candidates appearing on poll-units have been assigned. Normally returning officers declare the serial number assignments after the last day of withdrawal of nominations, which happens about two weeks before polling. ROM chips with mischievous codes can be readied within hours after the candidates’ serial numbers are known. During the two weeks before polling, the malicious ROM chips, or the motherboard, or possibly the whole control-unit, whatever appears easier, may be caused to replace the original ones. Would it be wise to assume that officials in charge of the EVMs, and/or those guarding the machines, are incorruptible?

Contd...

Luckily, this kind of possibility of a fraud before voting can be easily remedied. Instead of declaring the serial number of candidates two weeks in advance of polling, the serial numbers may be decided at each polling booth by random draws by the presiding officers in the presence of the polling agents of various parties just an hour or so before the poll opening. Thereafter their names may be affixed on the poll-units in appropriate order in the presence of the poll-agents. All that will need to be done by the POs is, paste them on the poll-units in proper order by the time the poll opens. This entails different serial orders for candidates in different booths. But that only improves fairness towards the candidates, distributing the chance to be at the top or bottom of the list more evenly.

Increasing the sense of responsibility of the presiding and polling officers at polling booths, could also be considered, by officially declaring all of them to have equal powers

Communists!
by Krishnakumar Narayanan on May 18, 2009 07:13 PM

Describing leaders of the current left front as communists is a misnomer. Communism makes people think about poverty. Capitalism tries to cover poverty - doing an ostrich's trick. Ruling power is required to cover poverty. But, to unearth the hidden truths and solve people's issues, inner power and resolution are required. Leaders lacking these and vying for political mileage are not communists.
