Some of the positives of new age media
by Umamaheswaran Dhananjayan on May 19, 2009 03:04 PM

Amid all the "Anchor Bashing", i would like to register the fact that the use of technology was very good in during the recent election coverage.

The presentation package using touch screen panels, Google maps, Database, Graphical representations and charts, Video walls etc... where really good.

In my opinion both NDTV & CNN IBN have really improved their technical capability.

Did the media play a non-partisan role really?
by democrazy on May 18, 2009 06:58 PM  | Hide replies

Or, did the Media play a role by selective reporting and convenient editing? It is a serious question one needs to ponder over.

The TV Media has enormous power and the editors, anchors can decide what to show, how to show, what to edit so that the sound bite appears convenient to a particular side. Just an example of Varun's alleged speech in Pilibhit. The tapes which came in public domain after almost a week of his speech there, were played repeatedly. No one bothered to accept his statement that this is not his voice, and they were doctored tapes. If the speech was really made in that manner, he asked how Pilibhit, and rest of UP, remained peaceful.

The BSP govt, to show their pro-minority sentiments, imposed NSA and put him in Jail. We all know how they had to withdraw the NSA and even in Supreme Court the decision went in favour of Varun.

BJP distanced itself from that alleged comment of Varun, and wrote to EC to say so. But this did not get due reporting. Subsequent legal battle got hyped up.

When strident statements by Congress partymen were made, the EC was soft in its approach. The media just made a symbolic reporting of that. We did not see the vigorous attack on them as compared to their reporting on Varun.

When the Swiss Bank money issue, a really serious national issue, came up, and the facts of how the govt had been inactive and even produced forged records (as stated by Swiss Bank association secretary), none of the media took Congress to task. BJP relentlessly focussed on the issue. But, all the time the media chose to report their views on present PM (being weak), or on some of Modi's wording. Even there too they selectively projected words out of context. The Obama-Osama comment, The Congress is 125 year old lady, etc were not presented correctly. A dumb comment from Priyanka that do I look old was repeated as a response to Modi's point.

Similarly, the Modi as a future PM remark by some of the BJP men was misrepresented by the media. Now, even a seasoned politician like Sharad Yadav says it sent confusing signals.

If we look at the seat loss, the BJP has lost about 20, while the erstwhile partners of Congress have lost heavily and Congress has gained (ex. WB, Kerala). BJP's big loss is in Rajasthan.

One must admit that BJP erred in communicating in simple direct language. Their style of communication was probably not easily understood by all common citizens - I mean, a large chunk of semi-literate voters. The channels chose to selectively play with words and present a view of them as demons. In an era of 24 hour TV, one need to be careful with what they say. When there is NO need to speak to the media, one should not. Many politicians, including those in BJP, do not realize what harm they will cause. There are many examples of such acts - D Srinivas, Kagodu Thimmappa, Renukacharya, Veerappa Moily, Lalu (road roller comment), Rabri (abusive language against Nitish), Jaswant Singh & Mulayam Singh (distributing money), etc.

Note: Sorry for the long post. Hope you will read it and respond.

its not long dear, its only tip of the iceberg. We all feel very helpless when we see lie, lie and blatent lie. I am studying indian politics for more than a decade and personally feel that someone else is running this country.

Thanks. We need to act as a committed team to build awareness and join the fight against this organized loot facilitated by interested groups. Most parties are corrupt. Those who want to fight it are conveniently tagged communal by the media and their masters on the left of centre.

News not Views
by Jitesh Agrawal on May 18, 2009 06:22 PM

All these news channels are supposed to give news and what they are dolling out is their biased views. There is poverty, curroption, non performance of govts everywhere and those are not news, what makes news is what how those ras*cal politicians play games and how can common man be influenced by biased news day in and out.

IPL becomes breaking news whereas someone getting killed in some remote area of the nation due to lack of medical care of hunger isnt.

I can go on listing but what is the use, I am fed up with the system we have got and the way this nation is gradually moving to become one more failed state.

Breaking News....Venkayya Naidu is on flight to Hyderabad to have talks with CB Naidu...

Breaking News...Venkayya Naidu just landed in Hderabad. He will have talks with CB Naidu in an hour so....

Meanwhile the Anchors in studio gets connected to Hyderabad reporters and the tamasha starts. The anchors in studio speaks louder and faster as if something important is taking place just like some bomb blast incident (it is called making issue out of nothing)

The reporters in Hyderabad now speaks about the 1999 incidents and CB Naidu can support NDA.

Before the reporter at Hyderabad completes, the newsreader gets restless and asks about where is Venkayya Naidu...

After a while ..another Breaking News..

Venkayya Naidu did not speak with CB Naidu. PERIOD

Lol !!!

Then there are examples galore of spelling mistakes, too much of stammering to search for words (notice Arnab, Rajdeep, Sagarika, and a few others). Also some of these anchors literally SHOUT. Some stop the guests from answering fully (when it is inconvenient to their editorial line?). Also, some politicians take too much time to answer to the point. The news is a pain most of the times.

I wonder how Lord Meghanad Desai managed to sit through these sessions.

P Sainath was pretty good. Vir Sanghvi, Shekhar Gupta were tomtoming their secular credentials as if they belong to Congress.

What a waste!!
by Mumbai Indian on May 18, 2009 05:16 PM  | Hide replies

This is such a waste. Everyone here is channel bashing. I too think that the media is biased towards Congress. But the fact is people voted for Congress, else how did it get so many seats?

If all the intelligent people know here that media is biased, how did they fall into the trap and voted for Congress??

the point is the same message is getting drilled by the channels to condition your mind. they won't allow you to think of the other side and consider whether what they say is right or not.

Did you notice their silence on the Swiss Bank black money issue. The issue on Quattrochi got buried so easily. In any other country, the media would have literally ripped open the party responsible for it.

In simple terms, it is the case of repetitive listening getting into the minds of the listener.

That explains why the "secular / Communal" fraud can be perpetrated by media. That explains why even though official toll of the Gujarat riots is 1000 (of which less than 800 are Muslims and the others Hindus), the media and the people still talk about 2000 or 3000 people killed. That explains why a digitised remix version of an old song comes to our memory earlier than the original song. Repeated listening invariably affects our subconscious.

These channels have lost their credibilty
by pradeep agarwal on May 18, 2009 05:02 PM

24*7 channels are all but a group of partisan individuals mostly funded by vested interest. They will continue to project every other leader including Modi as after power but keep raving about prince in waiting. It is an amazing sight when the biggest stooge of the entire lot barkha dutt sitting crossed legs with Priyanka & feeling blissful at the cost of viewrs. We will have to live with such psychophants of 10 janpath for another 5 years. It is the irony of nation that straight forward verdict of voter against regional party's goondagardi is shown as thumping win of Congress & Gandhi family charishma & end of BJP.congress returned to power after down to 137 in 99 & BJP from2 seats in 84 to 187 in 1999 because of voters trust & not due to these so called psepholgists.

All TV News Channels act in the garb of `secularism'
by VASUDEVAN V on May 18, 2009 04:13 PM

All the English media TV News Channels are an extension of the Congress party and openly canvass for the Congress. The anchors cover themselves in the garb of `secularism'. Varun Gandhi is an example. They kept on repeating his so called hate speech with their own additions to it till one got sick. Is this the way news is reported? Varun Gandhi may have spoken just once and the people may not even have understood what he said. But, by repeating this ad nauseam, it is the News channels that were creating communal frenzy and disharmony. If anyone had to be booked under NSA, it was the anchors of these News Channels. It is the same in the case of every news that is anti-Hindu, be it the arrest of the Sankaracharya or the creation of so called hindu terrorism. Some times one is left with a feeling that it is the Congress that is funding these news channels. Otherwise, how can the people of the country be so easily fooled by creating a non-existent Hindu terrorism totally forgetting the terrorism that really haunts the country. It is a shame indeed!Certainly the anchors of these News channels - Arnab of Times Now, Prannoy Roy of NDTV, Rajdeep Sardesai of CNN-IBN who appeared more happier than even the Congress at the election results. Is this neutral reporting?

Be wise to watch TV
by kandalam srinivas on May 18, 2009 04:09 PM

Let be an NDTV 24 X 7 or any other news channel in india they are all working in similar fashion. They are always at Breaking news. Most patetic show was the number Game in NDTV on 15th May at 8.00PM. Every body as an expert convinced the audience that It is easy for the BJP to form the Government rather than UPA. The same bucnch of people are discussing as if nothing was said earlier eveing with shining faces, smiling faces and wiped out all ill feelings turning the journalisim in to a big joke. Not an sinbgle word on exit poles and where these people went wrong. It is surprised that Bharka Dutt ( Though I admire her a lot)asking the defeated parties that when they are going to intorspect their failures. Who will tell these TV people to introspect their programmes, and increase the level of journalisim. In 1990 there is some sense pof responsibility in TV programmes now each programme to some extent each TV is polarized to political parties. We need to respect the defeatd candidates also. We should be more graceful and polite in presenting the news. TV role is to bring the news and get the opininon of the issues. You can see how many people are disssuing about the recession? Industrial role? Future of the youth in this country? Increasing the corruption levels in politics? Role of the middle persons? God please bring some responsibility in to the News channels. If any mediaperson is reading this blog should respond immediately.
