People of Assam chosen their fate.
by Indian on May 17, 2009 03:36 PM

In one of the forums in Rediff, I wrote that there are so many bomb blasts in Assam and there is no responsible action from the State or Central Govt. I also wrote that the people of Assam should reject the Cong because it failed to protect the people of Assam. Unfortunately, the results show completely different picture. May be this is because people wanted to keep the AGP away by voting against them. But voting for Cong has brought about the inherent danger of inviting more bomb blasts in the future because the state govt will not address this issue of illegal immigrants among which most of the terrorists are hidden. Also, there is hardly any movement against the other terrorist outfits like ULFA etc. Therefore it seems that for next five years, the people of Assam has chosen their fate to remain at the receiving end of terrorism.

BJP losss
by sixto dsilva on May 16, 2009 09:08 PM

BJP lost because it don't a good moderate face like Atalji. He was the face of BJP when they won the election and he became the PM. I think BJP need to think and start developing some strategy to rejuvenate itself from this mess. I am also sadden by BJP loss but they don't have good and moderate face leaders who the people can look and say he will do somthing to the nation and not Divide the nation based on Religion , caste etc...

Sad

I am saddened at NDA's defeat, much like I was pleasantly surprised when Congress won in 2004. Just as a change was necessary in 2004, a change was desperately needed in 2009. India just cannot do with a PM who takes Soniaji's permission to even go to the loo.

In my opinion, BJP is in the same position today as Congress was in mid and late nineties. The future appears bleak too unless the party somehow miraculously rejuvenates its cadres and is able to build a base in key large states such as AP, TN, WB, Orissa and Kerala and look at option outside mounting on the backs on unscrupulous allies. BJP today needs a Rahul Gandhi (much as I despise him).

There is a debate on who the next leader in the party would be. Frankly, this debate is a non-starter as the party badly needs workers rather than leaders. Modi's name as a successor has come too early. Only the person who can expand the party's base must be a contender and I am not sure if Modi has those abilities. He has won two elections in Gujarat, but then Gujarat was always a BJP bastion which it has never lost since 1989. In fact, during the earlier years, Gujarat used to send 20-plus BJP MPs to parliament, but now far lesser.

In the early 2000s after Sonia retained the party's presidency, someone quipped that if BJP workers were asked to elect the congress leader, it would have been same. Ironically, history repeats itself and if Congress workers were to elect a leader for BJP today, it would be Narendra Modi!
