I am saddened at NDA's defeat, much like I was pleasantly surprised when Congress won in 2004. Just as a change was necessary in 2004, a change was desperately needed in 2009. India just cannot do with a PM who takes Soniaji's permission to even go to the loo.
In my opinion, BJP is in the same position today as Congress was in mid and late nineties. The future appears bleak too unless the party somehow miraculously rejuvenates its cadres and is able to build a base in key large states such as AP, TN, WB, Orissa and Kerala and look at option outside mounting on the backs on unscrupulous allies. BJP today needs a Rahul Gandhi (much as I despise him).
There is a debate on who the next leader in the party would be. Frankly, this debate is a non-starter as the party badly needs workers rather than leaders. Modi's name as a successor has come too early. Only the person who can expand the party's base must be a contender and I am not sure if Modi has those abilities. He has won two elections in Gujarat, but then Gujarat was always a BJP bastion which it has never lost since 1989. In fact, during the earlier years, Gujarat used to send 20-plus BJP MPs to parliament, but now far lesser.
In the early 2000s after Sonia retained the party's presidency, someone quipped that if BJP workers were asked to elect the congress leader, it would have been same. Ironically, history repeats itself and if Congress workers were to elect a leader for BJP, it would be Narendra Modi!

good post! BJP need to build party from grass root level. You need to connect to Young Indian of today to get tomorrow's vote. Frankly speaking Aadvani's personal ambition has cost the part but I'm happy that Congress has improved numbers to keep left/sp/bsp out of the equation.

Showing Muslims,Christians, Minority communities AND Pakistan as an excuse, BJP is trying to polarize Hindus VERSUS Rest of the Communities Votes in India. However BJP did not FORESEE that propagating Hinduism will intrinsically IGNITE Casteism in India.
As per Mandal Commission, 54% Indians are BCs and 25% SC/STs. And these communities will eventually INSULATE themselves from BJP's Hinduism. Post Babri, Hinduism has cascaded to Casteism in India. Hence BC/SC/ST leaders like Lalu, Mulayam, Paswan, Mayawati have emerged. And Kumaraswamy, Naveen Patnaik, Nitish Kumar have just started deserting BJP's Hinduism.
* And there is NO such thing as Hinduism **till** 85% of all registered marriages in India are INTER-CASTE. * Till then the truth is there are NO Hindus in India.

Nothing will happen, Even now Xian % is less than 2 in India. And BOM blast and hijacks happend during BJP rule also...
The single hardest decision that the BJP must take is to get rid of the old guard that was unable to relate to people despite many postings in various forums. Their star performer Modi got the mandate from the people but Advani didn't so there is absolutely nothing wrong to push Modi. He has been accused of the Godhra riots but there is no case against him and the SC will soon give its verdict. The BJP reacted to the label of communalism by the minority-dominated media and projected a 'secular' image just as Bajpayee had done. This cost the BJP its traditional allies without getting new ones. The BJP must therefore sponsor the formation of a neutral media to counter the false charges levelled by the existing sources. Start working now for 2014.

Modi is one of the best CM's of the country along with a few others. His tenure for the past 8-9years has seen gujrat growing from a mere diamond cottage industry to one of the best industrial states in the country. Like the glorious erstwhile state of swarashtra of which mumbai was a part, the new gujrat seems a perfect state in all aspects... low corruption, big developments unlike the state of UP which is almost the complete opposite. People dont like him 'coz he is brash, I say why can't he be brash... Obama is, so was Putin, and even Hu Jintao and but they have led their countries...even Indira Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri were brash according to their times... today we need a strong willed person who is as much a politician as he is a brash...nothing against the young guard of congress and other parties, to me they are the sons and daughters of an owner or CEO of a company or children of movie stars who fight under the aura of someone else...

what has worked in Gujarat, doesnt mean it works at national level. I would think someone like Arun jaitley fits better as PM.

I totally agree... the congress is hell of a political party... and why did sonia step down, wasn't it a political move... and whatever the constitution might say, how can not elected leader by the people be the leader of the elected.
BJP may be a very good party and very good agenda. But to win the election, it should know the nation's pulse. Indian public does not recognise good work. They need certain dialogs. BJP couldn't make the impact about all the wrong doings of Congress. BJP should get people from Congress to defeat Congress.
