Kidding?
by Anil Suri on May 12, 2009 06:09 AM  | Hide replies

"...such powerful party leaders don't come to Kidderpore mohalla every day."

Prakash Karat, powerful? Can he or Yechuri win even a municipal election?

Powerful indeed!

Mr. Suri,
Mr. Prakash Karat And Mr. Sitaram Yeturi May Not Win Election, But Their Very Speeches With Rationale Infect Make Impact.
The Media Is Not Fool To Chase Them 24x7.
At Least, They Are Secular, And Down To Earth---- Common Man Type.
Anyway Its My Opinion, You Have Full Right To Voice Your Thoughts.

prediction of result in Bengal
by Shyamal Pain on May 12, 2009 12:25 AM  | Hide replies

Out of 42 seats, Left front got 35 in 2004 while Congress and Trinamool together got 7. In 2009, the prediction is :
Congress Trinamool alliance : 22
Left Front : 20
Rumour is that Buddhadeb Bhattacharya is going to resign.

You did well. Much better than poll pundits. But Buddha babu may not resign yet. It should be Comrade Karat who must first resign.

As I said earlier the benchmark should be the 2001 Assembly results when there was an alliance between TMC and Congree and not the 2004 results when there was no such alliance. LF will naturally suffer some losses from the 2004 LS results, because it is facing an alliance this time. However, some of the rural losses in E. Midnapore and S. 24 Paraganas will be made up by gains in urban and industrial belts around Calcutta and Haldia. There is no reason to think that TMC and Congress will do any better than they did in 2001 -- and that is a long, long way from achieving power in WB. Also, as I said befor, if you are believing the media hype today, then just google and read the media reports from those days ...

True. Even Congress and Mamata admit that taking left out is a piece-by-piece process and will take time.

It is very likely that the left will lose in Kerala and may see a few seats shift hands but overall, not a sea change in WB.

The benchmark will go haywire in the context of hate towards the left! The moment will be seized by many Left insiders to get out of terrors they face !
Its only 5 days from now !
All will see!

Please stop proclaiming a revolution that aren't going to happen. In any case, this is a Lok Sabha not a Bidhan Sabha election. Mamata Banerjee is trying to out-left the Left, while leading a right-wing coalition with the help of some Naxalites (and a few of their intellectual backers) who were always opposed to the Left right from the beginning. This is not new, and like before it is going to fail again. As you said, we will know in five days, but I am expecting no surprises here.
TMC Congree will get 11-12 seats including possibly the all-important Tamluk seat. BJP will pick up the Darjeeling seat which has been gifted to it. Two days after that, Mamata will throw a fit and break the TMC-Congress alliance, and some amount of normalcy will return to the state.

BJP - 1 (Darjeeling)
Cong(I) - 4/5 (Malda N, Malda S, Jangipur, Behrampur & probably Murshidabad or Raiganj)
TMC 8-12 (Calcutta S, Calcutta N, Tamluk, Kanthi, Barasat, Srerampore, Diamond Harbour,Joynagar, May also win Ranaghat, Krishnanagar, Birbhum,Bongaon, Uluberia and Basirhat)
LDF - Rest of it.

This is almost a best scenario for TMC. I doubt very much that LF will lose in Birbhum, Bongaon, Uluberia or for that matter Calcutta North this time.

The problem with Mamata's "mahajot" is its rank opportunism. Various people are in it for various reasons. Mamata wants to unseat CPM and Congress wants to ride this wave. Upto this is fine -- but clearly not enough to be a threat to the LF. But Mamata's Nandi-Singur "andolon" was organized with the help of ultra-Left Maoists of various hues. Their objective is to force the LF out in order to clear space for their brand of Leftism -- that has been stifled in the state because of the Establishment Leftists. Instead of trying to create a true left alternative in which they have failed miserably, they are banking on Mamata to create the space for them to unleash mayhem in the state.

The people of WB are not stupid -- they see through all this. It is one thing to punish the errant CPM gram panchyat or municipality, but another thing altogether to replace the Buddhadev govt. with this band of disparate goons. The Mamata brigade is in for a surprise. We will see in a few days.

Utter failure of the left
by Shyamal Pain on May 12, 2009 12:20 AM

The left has failed in Bengal because of its leftist dogma. The land reform in late 70's , which made left's position strong in rural bengal, is coming to bite back. Land reform has caused small land holdings to numerous farmers. Today, with such small holdings, one cannot have economies of scale or earn a living wage for the family. Left's regressive policies have discouraged enterpreneurs to create new businesses. It is a blessing that some Marwari and Gujarati businessmen still call Bengal their home. Otherwise, things would have been far worse.
Communists all over the world are opposed to modern techniques such as corporate and contract farming, urbanization etc. It has been in the left government's interest to keep the huge rural population, poor. If you are a poor farmer, you are dependent on the government for subsidized food, seed, water, electricity, pesticide etc. The dependency makes you a guaranteed voter for the rulers. If you do contract farming with Pepsi, you will no longer be dependent on the government but on Pepsi. So the rulers may lose your vote.

Today in rural Bengal, left cadres are the overlords whom every villager must obey. This is the tragedy of Bengal. The left does not want reforms for the fear of losing votes.

TMC Congress will get at most 12 seats.
by Jagadis Bose on May 12, 2009 12:11 AM

Of course, because of the alliance TMC will increase their tally. The benchmark of comparison should be the Assembly elections of 2001, the last time they had the same alliance. If one looks back (google newspaper reports from that time) there was the same hype about the end of the LF in WB, talk of a new beginning etc.,
as well as the political violence (the famous Panskura/Garbeta/Kespur line of TMC) that we witness now. The result was LF winning 199 seats -- which roughly translates to about 30 LS seats. Rest assured that the situation would be no different this time -- Nandi-Singur notwithstanding. The dedicated party machinery and the intra-Left unity will make sure of that. However, the scare has been good for the CPM and good for the state. This is the virtue of democracy.

Bengal would rise again but it is not easy!!!

Bengal would rise again but it is not easy!!!
Bengal would have to fight back....

Just like it has not been been for Sourav in Indian cricket even after scroring 18000 plus runs !!!!
There are so many detractors of sourav Da and also same is true that of bengal!!!
Sourav had to fight his way back....
same way Bengal would have to fight their way back!!!
Bengal can not sit back on its past glory!!!

basically .. Bongs have self destructive tendencies of being too much aware of their rights but not knowing about their reponsibilty thus allowing communists to rule for so long and...

in the process have allowed others to dominate business, finanace of Kolkata city..

Leftist ideology has lost its ideological base of equality for all and has been a bane for Bengal as Bengal has lost its spritual soul with advent of leftists..& domination of city business by Marwaris

.also CPM has deprived bengal of its religious strength , which was strong part of culture there ealier with greats like RamaKrishna Paramhansa,Gaurang and Vivekananad ,Tagore

However, I am positive that Bengal would find its way out ...and rise again and learn to move ahead with others ...
reform like Russia,China where communists have started going to Church unlike stupid bengali communist who think going to temple is wrong ( stupid idea)

I am sure that things would change for bengal and it is not going to be easy.. Bengal ha

until and unless they believe north Indians or till they try to befriend with non Bengalees, they can never rise. The day they would realise that actually, non Bengalees are the main threat and predators for them, automatically they would start rising. You don't hav to think about that then.
