Azhagiri shud win
by Your Mate on May 08, 2009 10:01 PM  | Hide replies

If azhagiri does not win, he will become another Kannagi and Madurai will burn to Ashes. It will give a good reason for his father to erect his statue in Marina beach.

This election fight in Madurai is really a battle between Good and Evil. This is true.In the case of Alagiri he was responsible for the attack on the Dinakaran office and even the Marans were infuriated and rushed to the CM to stop this. The CM as Home Minister did not intervene and benignly allowed the attack to be carried out.Now that person is to be elected. This is a travesty of democracy.God knows how the citizens of Madurai will stand up for Good and defeat Evil.

TN - the fiefdom of the Dravidian parties
by Jay Sen on May 08, 2009 08:58 PM  | Hide replies

Over the last 40 years or so, the Dravidian parties have held sway in TN and have progressively reduced the state to becoming their fiefdom - to be raped and plundered at will. Check out the roads in Madras and you will know. Not one clean, smooth stretch and this is a metro.

Goons hold sway everywhere - DMK or Amma - each more horrible than the other. No dissent is tolerated - TN is unique in this aspect. Slightest dissent or adverse media reports - check out the savage reactions from the other side. And people think TN is peaceful, progressive. My foot!

The conscious over-Tamilification of the state by these parties for their own political ends has brought about a strange kind of xenophobic (includes anyone non-Tamil) culture out there - go the Madras and check out. I am not saying that all in TN are this way - no. There is a large section that is work minded and peaceful. But this group is way too docile, silent and non-participative.

In net sum, people anywhere deserve the politicians they have.

The big edit
by Jay Sen on May 08, 2009 08:47 PM

I wrote a rather scathing piece just now on voters apathy and corruption. No foul language. But somehow rediff's partisan moderator has blocked it. Just to check if the piece is over-abusive of the Congress and the UPA. If it is, we all know - such peices do not get published usually. Bash the BJP, bingo - you are there on the board.

Why blame Azhagiri or other corrupt politicians only?
by Jay Sen on May 08, 2009 08:44 PM  | Hide replies

A significant section of voters too are to blame. It has become a trend amongst the lower income sections of society to expect to make a quick and neat buck during the elections. This expectation ranges from 1500 - 3000 Rs. May be more. People see this as a "rightful" earning.
Ask around - your driver, maid, your local cobbler, or mechanic - largely slum dwelling population - and they will tell you. Nonchalantly.
This being the case, when people rightfully expect to receive this money (from 3 or 4 sources combined) for their vote, what chance does a clean political aspirant have - someone who does not have money but has a good, clean image. Our own voters will not consider him - point is they dont care for good or bad.

The middle-class and above - do not vote at all mostly. Check out the turnouts in the cities and you will see.

Then why do we crib about corrupt politicians? how much better off are we all? Do we really care to vote and demand better people in power? Do the poor really care - when they sell themselves off to venal elements?

Azhagiri is one big, ugly, horrible manifestation of this deadly virus affecting our country. I pray to God he loses out - else, even Goddess Meenakshi may not be able to save Madurai.
