Widespread misconceptions and stereotypes about Islam, particularly after the 9/11 terror attacks, were a blessing for Jacquelyn Harper.
"You hear a lot of bad things about Islam, and that was a lot of the reason I wanted to learn about it," she told the American-Statesman on Monday, May 4.

Harper, who was a member of the conservative confessional branch of the Lutheran Church, said such stereotypes aroused her curiosity to know about Islam.

"When I started reading, I found that none of the stereotypes about the way women are treated were true."

A recent U.S. survey revealed that the majority of Americans know very little about Islam and have negative opinions on Muslims, estimated to number more than seven millions.

The Pew Research Center for the People and the Press and the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life found that the view of Islam in the society is largely affected by the media.

The head of the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ), America's largest Jewish movement, has accused US media and politicians of demonizing Islam and portraying Muslims as "satanic figures."

Famed U.S. academic Stephen Schwartz had criticized the Western media for failing to meet the challenge of reporting on Islam and Arab issues after the 9/11 attacks.

Good Analysis

Good dissection. But such article in my opinion are more meant to keep Hindus divided not only into castes but also on regional basis. It is a tragedy that because of division after division in Hindus they have lost their voting powers. There is an acute need for unity amongst Hindus. There is no communalism in propagating for unity amongst Hindus as and if there is no communalism in keeping Muslims or Ydavs or Jats united in themselves but not in Hindu society. It is the duty of those who want to rule by foul means as well as those who do not wish well of Hindus as a society, to strive to divide Hindus in as many groups as possible. That is the only way which can keep BJP away from the power at the centre.RSS has tried its best not to allow division on caste basis and on regional basis-Raj Thakere tried this in maharstra to benefit a 'secular' national party, but has not been successful to a satisfactory scale, because of the more vigorous efforts of the pseudo seculars not to let Hindus unite. Now it is upto Hindus what they want-do they want to continue like this or they want some dominent role for them in the fate of India. The results of this election will be quite revealing.
