Indians more demanding!! - but not the stakeholders (press/media)
by Ravichandran Rajamannar on Apr 01, 2009 09:52 AM

As Indians gain economic independence slowly, they are freed from the need to earn money on daily basis. They can afford to spend time on all injustices around them and are becoming politically demanding as well. But the real let down is most of press and media who are following the footpath of politicians in throwing their muscle around and building their corpus rather than discharging their duties. Most of the time, they are happy with passive reporting. Can we ever forgive them for not ensuring active support for Kalams nomination and now ignoring a perfect opportunity to demand "getting India's money back from tax havens abroad" from all political parties.

Enough is enough, that is what Varun Gandhi said.
by kumar on Mar 25, 2009 07:46 PM

Whatever Varun said, while uncivil or discourteous, was not wrong as such.

You need to see why some Hindus, generally quite tolerant, say such angry things.

There have been centuries of murder and mayhem that Hindus have faced at the hands of aggressive Muslims and Christians. When Hindus see the same nonsense go on even now, at times the anger spills out.

You may argue that some Muslims and Christians have been good citizens. Well, what is the big deal? Especially when you look at how many of them have gone the other way. (All J-K terrorists are muslims; 70% of Naxals in Orissa and all Naga seperatists are Christian.)

The greater issue is of equality and justice.

Who asked for partition?

Who gets away with murder even today in J-K?

Which community is a refugee in its own country? (Kashmiri Hindus)

Why is it okay for missionaries to go around bad-mouthing Hindu culture when Satanic Verses (critical of Islam) gets immediately banned?

Some Hindus think enough is enough, and Varun looks good to them.

Issues of this Election
by mailme alladin on Mar 25, 2009 07:28 PM  | Hide replies

I think in the rule of 5 years no other govt. has been able to create so many major sacms.
1. Price hike of essentials
2. Terrorists attack
3. Farmers suicide
4. Nuclear deal
5. Satyam scam
6. Stock market crash
7. Unemployment

So many major scams is a boon for the govt, because the oppositions parties are confused on which scam the govt to be attacked.

Elections
by Rajasekaran on Mar 25, 2009 07:07 PM  | Hide replies

There is visible apathy towards elections among the young voters. They do not have any trust on the present political leaders' honesty, reliability and capability.

The experienced electorate is disillusioned with the whole system. They are fed up with the politicians. Over the past many years they have seen all their favourite leaders failing miserably mainly on honesty and trust.

It is time our politicians realised that their acts of corruption, violence, regionalism, casteism, etc., are endangering the democaratic process of elections and causing people to lose faith in the system.

Once elected politicians become demanding
by mallaiah anchoori on Mar 25, 2009 07:06 PM

There is a sea change in the mind set of the people of today compared to those of the yesteryears on account of their increasing awareness as to political realities and their improved standard of life which in turn is due to the increased literacy. The voter of today does not merely think of the basic needs of "roti, kapda & makan"but some thing definitely beyond that which assures him a better standard of living. They are not to be wooed by the lame promises of the political leaders but have become conscious of the value of their most powerful weapon-ballot.In a way,the stiff opposition in the contestants is making the voter stronger & stronger for a better bargain thus making them more demand some than ever before. His demands are increasing in tune with the changing needs in the life style & also the increased affordability of the successive govts. There were not so many welfare measures took up by the govts earlier, but these have almost come to stay as a "must" for the people over a period of time.Sensing the moods of the people, politicians too are,in a way, strengthening the demand power of the people, some times by promising even moon. The innocent & poor franchise hardly realise that when once a political party comes to power it dumps all the promises made in the election manifesto & become DEMANDING for people in terms various taxes & all the corruptive practices they let in in order to make up what all they spend in the elections & make huge monies thereafter for them.
