It is surprising that the Election Commission of India is both a complainant and a judge in case of alleged indiscreetness of Mr. Varun Gandhi. It is against the rules of natural justice. Codes of Conduct laid down by the Election Commission for a candidate comes into force only after the notifications are issued are issued. Before the notification is issued there are no candidates, only possible candidates, who may be changed any time before nomination papers are actually filed. So advice of the Election Commission to BJP is without any substance and force of law. It is also surprising that the Election Commission has taken upon itself the responsibility to vouch that the CD allegedly showing Gandhi's vitroilic language has not been doctored. Are the Election Commissioners forensic experts? They should have at least shown the minimum courtesey to send the CD to forensic experts for examination before lambasting Mr. Gandhi. If the BJP does not accept recommendation of the Election Commission, it will only lower the dignity of the commission, and the commission itself will be held responsible for it.

It helps if you have a committed friend as a member of the election commission. By targeting Varun the Congress party has actually targetted his party. And every body knows who that committed friend in the commission is. Wait for the time when this guy becomes the chief.
The consecutive governments in India have only used symbolism in the name of minority policies. Instead of focusing on the real issues, as to why Indian M*slims are at the bottom of the social rung, why the literacy rate of M*slims is the lowest, what are the reasons that M*slims fail to enrol their kids for school, what can be done to utilise the tremendous skills of business and entrepreneurship, all we are given is a pathetic subsidy on an overpriced airline ticket and that too, mainly for its own good. Symbolism sells, in India, it sells big. The fact that it also gives an issue to perennial M*slim-h*ters like Togadia, Singhal and Giriraj Kishore, is of no concern to it. Afterall, when these people bark, and occasionally bite, which way the terrified M*slim would turn to? Is it just a co-incidence or a well though strategy, that the BJP led government did not abolish the Haj subisidy in its 6 years of power because that would deprive its core M*slim-bashing constituency one of the favourite issues? Even M*slim leaders such as Syed Shahabuddin (not that Siwan hoodlum, but the ex-diplomat) has been demanding for 20 years that the Indian government should do away with the so-called Haj subsidy.

He also claims that no M*slim leader ever asked for it. The bottomline is this, Indian M*slims should reject the subsidized Air India ticket, if not for anything else then for common sense only. Once the Haj market opens and this forced monopoly of Air India goes, I would not be surprised if other airlines start offering discounts to the Hajis. Afterall, which company wouldn’t want to tap in an yearly market in excess of Rs. 350 crores, and that too, just for the airfare.
EC can take action against Varun Gandhi, But before that :
1) Take action against Karunanidhi - he completely manipulated Tirumangalam elections when EC had just one constituency to supervise- what did they do ?/ In fact Mr Naresh Gupta, local Election chief has put it on record.
2) When Stalin distributed money - what did election commission do?
3) When so many churches in India actually preach to their "flock" not to vote for BJP, what does election commission do?
4) Why is election commission not objecting to Haj and Jerusalem subsidy given to Muslims and Christians?
5) How is it that Election commission does not act against Shahi Imam Bukhari when he gives inflammatory speeches before elections?
6) Why is it that always the "secular whipping" is reserved for BJP?? Are parties like Congress and Communists and DMK and PMK secular?/ do they not transcend their secular boundaries and what does EC do at that time?
All that Varun Gandhi said was IF any muslim insults Hindus, then he has to be shunted to Pakistan ... yes it is inflammatory -- but is it as inflammatory as the other parties speak?? Come to Tamil Nadu and see how Dravidar Kazhagam abuse Brahmins..all to favour DMK

But does the idea of appeasement have any basis in fact? Like all powerful but divisive ideas this too belongs to the realm of imagination. Ever since the Rajiv Gandhi Government cynically modified M*slim personal law after the Shah Bano judgment in the mid-1980s (which was equally cynically balanced by the opening of the locks on the Babri Masjid), the accusations of `reverse' discrimination have been legion. Article 370 on Jammu and Kashmir, the absence of a common civil code and the special rights of minority educational institutions are some of the examples dredged up to fan the communal debate. No mention here, of course, of the privileges enjoyed by the majority community, the best example being the tax advantages conferred on H*ndu Undivided Families.
Re: Re: @JOSHI

One way to subject this notion of appeasement to critical examination is to list the special rights enjoyed by each religious group and assess the rationale of, or its absence for, each privilege. Another is to ask if the members of the religious minorities — especially M*slims — now enjoy a superior social and economic position, as they must be if the state has been "appeasing" them while discriminating against members of the religious majority. It only takes a naked eye to observe that M*slims on the average are not by any standard at an economically higher level than the H*ndus. No reference to the retail outlets and restaurants that are owned by the M*slims or the remittances that they receive from relatives working in West Asia or even to refurbished m*sques can distort the picture of a community that as a whole is disadvantageously placed in comparison to Indians who belong to all other r*ligions. Of course, prejudices cannot countenance honest observation.
