After having lost the bid to become the UNSG, the diplomat is now entering national politics from a constituency about which he knows next to nothing.
This is democracy in reverse, imposed from top down for personal kicks, not from bottom up as a representative of people.

Foregone conclusion
by prakash mahajan on Mar 20, 2009 05:15 PM

Shashi's victory is a foregone conclusion. If all the under-35 female voters of Trivandrum vote for Shashi, his win is assured. And I am sure a lot of above-35s would also definitely voting for him. As a matter of fact, Shashi's nomination as a candidate from Tvm will help the Congress to enlarge its image and vote base in other Kerala constituencies also.

Ground report
by Anoop R on Mar 20, 2009 01:16 PM  | Hide replies

Most probable candidates are:
1. Shashi Tharoor (Congress) : Too well-known in national/international media. Pretty unknown in Kerala. Central Congress leadership quota. State Congress had to accept. Initially, was considered for Palakkad. Was shifted to Thiruvananthapuram, since the latter was more urban. His effigy was burnt in front of State Congress headquarters by alleged Youth Congress activists. Fate will depend on how Congress leaders/workers campaign for him.
2. Ramachandran Nair (CPI) : CPI district secretary, lawyer. Not much known outside political circles. Member of CPI, so probably uncorrupt and decent. Last CPI MP had these same qualities, but was probably not quite made of to be an MP. This could cost CPI dearly.
3. O Rajagopal (BJP) : Decent image. Much acclaimed for bringing in "Railway development" to Kerala, while he was junior minister. Stunned everyone by garnering over 2 lakh votes in 2004. Was reduced to less than 50,000 in 1995 byelections (called due to the death of sitting MP), attributed to the heavy infighting in state BJP unit. Infighting still heavy in BJP.
4. Neelalohidadasan Nadar (BSP): Was Janata Dal minister in last left front cabinet, but had to resign due to alleged sexual misbehaviour with an IAS official. Strong in the southern coastal areas, will cut into left-front votes. Could garner 50,000-1,00,000 votes
5. K Muralidharan (NCP) : Karunakaran's son. Father and son not cozy these days, atleast in public. Much will depend on Karunakar

Much will depend on Karunakaran's actions. If Karunakaran honestly campaigns for Congress, Murali should be happy even if he manages 10000 votes.

Correction on Rajagopal:
Was reduced to less than 50,000 in ***2005*** byelections ...

I wish to vote for LDF.

But sashi is a better fit for the position than all in the list, and an asset to parliament.

I bet, BJP, NCP, BSP are not going to make even 10000 votes together.

I envy the polititians in Tamil nadu. Irrespective of the party, they work for the welfare of the state...They are good in bargaining for that too..

I was heavily disappointed after seeing the railway budget very year.
Though for 4.5 years MPs from teh state was in a baragining position, they couldnt do anything. Same was when congress on power and we had handfull of MPs from the state...

There was worth for none representatives like GM banathwala, who visits the state only once in 5 years....

This time...it doesnt matter whether it LDF or UDF or any others (ofcourse no communal outfits)..We should consider the worthiness of candidate.

Forgot to say...
Though driven by BJPs (never happen) ambition to start account in kerala..Rajgopal's efforts in railways needs to be apreciated.
He is a nice and able man...
but part of a
group who want to turn the country into another pakistan...

NARAYAN MURTHYS SPEECH
by eekw on Mar 20, 2009 11:23 AM  | Hide replies

Our intellectual arrogance has also not helped our society. I have traveled extensively, and in my experience, have not come across another society where people are as contemptuous of better societies as we are, with as little progress as we have achieved. Remember that arrogance breeds hypocrisy. No other society gloats so much about the past as we do, with as little current accomplishment.

Bane of our society is, we do not recognise the real quality required for a work to be done. Even in singing competition we see the public voting for the best looking person rather than the best singing person. We get what we deserve.

The most important attribute of a progressive society is respect for others who have accomplished more than they themselves have, and learn from them. Contrary to this, our leaders make us believe that other societies do not know anything! At the same time, everyday, in the newspapers, you will find numerous claims from our leaders that ours is the greatest nation. These people would do well to remember Thomas Carlyle’s words: The greatest of faults is to be conscious of none.
