The Facts
by Suresh on Apr 27, 2009 10:05 AM

I have been lucky to be a part of both lifestyles. I live in Bangalore and my uncles live in a village as agriculturists. I visit them atleast 15 time a year and spend some time understanding the real issues. I have also worked with them and the Govt to get things done. The real problem I see, is the lack of good governance at rural levels. The govt ( Both State and Central) have well designed programmes to help them. Whether it is IAY, NREGA, MPLADS and other local programmes. The villagers are highly unaware of the actual benefits of these schemes. The penetration is limited based on the ability of the Gram Panchayat president. Of Course, there is money laundering that happens too and I have been confronted for the same. But believe me, I do not object to that, because I am too small to take on the whole system right now. By allowing them to do what they want to do, I have still been able to bring a lot of benefits to the village. There are lot of awards, schemes and NGOs and NRI s waiting to help, but there is no credible face or a proper system and all these people are worried about their money being mis-used. So we need a good system of Governance, Information penentration, higher literacy level and awareness. Of course the minimum support price, fertilizer dist are all issues that need to be handled anyway.

Slave mentality
by Ramanath Babu on Apr 27, 2009 09:57 AM  | Hide replies

Despite the fact that Dev Gowda is only doing lip service to the farmers, and earning crores for himself and his family, this man is pinning hope on that crorepati beggar! The BJP government should ensure that farmers form cooperative socieities (if non-existant right now) and agricultural crops must be insured against loss, theft etc. so that the farmers are not forced to commit suicide.

Instead of complaining, and showing his slave mentality, he should approach the local BJP leaders (being the ruling party) alongwith other farmers who must be also undergoing the same trauma, and force the state government to take concrete action. We indians know only to complaint. Participate in the governance by voicing your problems effectively and the government of the day will do the needful.

How much money did you got

Mr. Devraj this is old style of gimmick by our great Devagowda. he has done all sorts of dramas to win votes from the the people, now this is one of the gimmick he does. Our beloved people be careful all parties have started this type of gimmick to get votes. You can find a new gimmick by our neighbour Mr. karunanidhi going for fast for the cause of Tamilians in Srilanka when half of the Tamil nadu people are dying with hunger. Kudos to Tamil Nadu CM.

Karnataka politicians
by subramanian v on Apr 27, 2009 09:54 AM

It is very sad that Karnataka has been saddled with self serving casteist politicians, who concentrate only on Bangalore so that it remains a show piece. I have travelled to the interiors of Karnataka and the condition of the people there is very bad. Unfortunately the present CM also is not doing much. He is not a development oriented like Narendra Modi.

Agriculture should be given prime importance.
by Muldic on Apr 27, 2009 09:52 AM  | Hide replies

It is sad to see that a farmer is starving. Like Engineering students should be encouraged to take up studies in Agricultural science. People should get more and more interest in cultivating.

People should praise and acknowledge farmers. They should be recognised and given national awards too. They should not be neglected like this.

Muldic,

There is no scientific farming here in INdia. There was an article on an IITian turned farmer in rediff sometime back. He has learned scientific farming from the Israel where they do not waste even a drop of water. Definitely, it is the responsibility of the state governments concerned to impart necessary education on scientific farming to the agriculturists. It is also high time group farming practice be done and all crops must be insured against loss by flood/drought, fire, theft, etc..
