A Dalit's daughter should be made PM: Maya
by JGN on Apr 26, 2009 02:59 PM  | Hide replies

She is in fact befooling the Dalits and making money by means fair or foul. What has she done for the dalits so far, except constructing "Ambedkar Parks" and installing her own statues? The dalits would be better off without such self-serving Politicians.

That's for them to decide and judging by the looks of it they are solidly behind Mayawati and the BSp, so she must be doing something right...

She is by no means a dalit. Just misusing her caste. This is open casteism and no one is complaining.

Ant and the grasshopper?
by Thomas Mathew on Apr 26, 2009 02:43 PM  | Hide replies

Someone posted the analogy of the 'ant and the grasshopper' in the context of 'Quota' and reservations for backward castes. Traditionally, in the Indian society as we all know caste was more division of labor and so on,artisans, craftsmen, carpenters, warriors etc, every caste had its own skill-set to be proud of except the guys who were at the top of the pecking order, the priestly Brahmin caste who had no skill sets at all but still gnawed their way into the top of the pecking order by promoting superstition and useless magically 'rituals' and stuff. My point is if the fellas who had no real skill set and no real 'work' to do arrived at the top of the hierarchy, how is the story of the ant and the grasshopper applicable to explain the Indian caste scenario?

NO offense to Brahmns I have great respect for them, simply curious......

The question is who works harder, Chanakya the economist or Mr X the carpenter? Look the analogy of the 'ant and the grasshopper' implied the set of folks who were lazy became backward, when the truth is its not laziness, its folks who had the positions where they had theleverage to accumulate wealth passed on to generations, the Brahmins for instance had a stranglehold over the kings and stuff.

Its like the current argument about who is to be paid more, a Doctor or an investment banker? Is the doctor generally paid less because he's lazy?

Caste system in Vedic era was determined by Profession rather than by birth. Ved Vyasa who is said to have divided the Vedas and wrote Mahabharata was the son of a fisheer-woman and Valmiki was a tribal. Even the person known as "Father of Malayalam Language", Thunchath Ramanujan Ezhuthan was an OBC. Caste system was more of a creation of 1slamic invaders and European Colonizers (mainly Brtishers). The story of thousands of years of oppression is also a fraud played on the Indians. The first Iron Plough manufactured in India was in the year 1904 (by the Laxmanrao Kirloskar). Credit for manufacture of the first Electric Motor and Monobloc Pump also goes to him. Power generation in our Country was about 2 MW (2000 KW) in 1948. What ever we see in our Country today came into existence only after that.

dear "sir" thomas,
it has never been in the caste system (traditionally) for anyone to be on top. the caste system was initially based on the kind of work that one did and it was not based on birth. next, brahmins occupied the topmost position in such a system because of the knowledge they possessed and not because of the "magic" they did. it only happened in the late 1800s that such brahmins were born. regarding the superstition, the christian society has been far more superstitious than the hindu society till mid 1900s. e.g. in india women got the right to vote from the day 1. in the european system they got this right very late. in the mid 1700s the number of women burnt alive on charges of "black magic" far exceeds those that were burnt in india for the same. Yes, even in the christian society the priests were at the top of the pecking order exploiting people
simplicity and fear of the unknown. My only point was that the story of the 'ant and the grashopper' is'nt exactly a true description of traditional Indian society because it was'nt a simple rule of thump as to the hardest worker reaping the highest rewards or anything like that

in that case i will have to re-read the story. my point was brahmins are actually not that bad as they are thought to be by all. they were the most concerned lot for the general well-being of human race. they used to eat by begging not because they didnt want to work but coz they had renounced the worldly desires. but, at times of invasions, they were up at arms with the enemy because mother land was their first concern...

dear Mathew, Brahmins were into learning and teaching, not just rituals. In this era of "knowledge based economy", you will realise their contibution better. If India is emerging as a global knowledge hub, it is because of importance of education that every Brahmin family inculcates into their children. Traditionally, they were also vaidyas and pundits-- that is why, today, Indian doctors are respected world over.

Please don't make the PM of India a joke.
by Joy Gupta on Apr 26, 2009 02:42 PM  | Hide replies

Please spare us this joker called Mayavati. We already have some inept persons filling the post of PM like VP Singh, Chandrasekhar, IK Gujral, Deve Gowda. Even MMS is not a very good choice despite his sound academic background but at least he has the charisma to become the PM of a country like India. But with Maya becoming PM, the post will become only a joke.
