Respect the Constitution
by Ary Doriz on Apr 30, 2009 02:07 AM  | Hide replies

My only question is to people who then oppose Sonia Gandhi as PM. She is elected, by overwhelming majority, to the Parliament and there is no constitutional bar on her. There are people who have problems with everything.

The author of this article should come clean on Sonia as PM!! It is because the two are not different issues....

Just because the constitution is silent (probably, they never visualized a scenario where a foreign born person will try to head a party to take a shot at governing the nation), we cannot accept a person who is not a natual Indian citizen. Even in USA, a foreign born person can't become president.

If we allow this to happen in India, soon one may see a enemy country trying to plant one of its agents into a politician's family to try and take control, something like 'The Second Lady' by Irving Wallace(?)

I am not giving a commentary on the constitution but on the article that has been written. It presents only one side in a very biased manner. These questions must be debated and discussed. The author tries to pass ajudgement without considering pros and cons of all provisions.

And I hate when people keep rushing to cite example of US at every breath. And Indian voters are suave, its only politicians, media persons and not to forget, the astrologers who have been fooled everytime. So separate fact from fiction, 'The Second lady'. India has its own unique problems and it needs indegeneous solutions, not imported ones.

The reality of Lok Sabha Elections!
by Radhakrishna Iyer on Apr 28, 2009 01:38 PM

If we have a long hard look at the Lok Sabha elections what do we find in fact?

Firstly today there are inordinately high number of Criminals coming into the fray. Once in there is a very good chance that they get elected by the use of muscle power.

Secondly there are a huge number of crorepathis coming into the fray. Some of them have earned their wealth in dubious ways and have no qualms in dishing out money in innovative ways to the electorate to get a good shot at being elected.

Thirdly it is populated by politicians of dubious order. Some of the tools in trade are to throw as much mud at the opposing candidates and hope that some of it stick. They have great recourse to sound bytes rather than any real substance. They indulge in creating a huge level of hype where none exist and in short create a spectacle of themselves. There are unacceptable factors like voting your caste instead of casting your vote. It does not matter what content the opposition has but if you see a man (or woman) of your caste you vote for him (or her) no questions asked. Without naming names there are a few voters from caste who get votes even after committing murder.

Fourthly there are extraordinary occurances that can happen only in India. Like in Bangalore members of the minority community found their names off the voting list and so there was a very low turnout recorded when in fact voters were disenfranchised.

Where will an honest upright scholarly person expect to win??

Not agreeable

In India, you do not need merites to win elections! A nation of largely illiterate people, will elect another illiterate as their leader with out doubt. Until we establish minimum qualification criteria, and we see minimum of 80-90 percent literacy, I support RS entry, as it supports meritocracy!!

bad egg, it doesn't support democracy! democratic line is the safest option. with RS route, the dimwit families will rule this country for another 100 years.

but isnt MMS better than Laloo Jadav, Govinda, Sonia Gandhi , Left folks or any of the other elected parliamenterians? I definitely think so. Also remember Pranab Mukherjee was never Pm but much of his tenure in parliament is by RS nominations and even Advani praises his accomplishments.

Get your priorities right

Hiya Latha girl
You seem to be labouring under the impression that election to the Lok Sabha is the be-all and come-all as far as being eligible to sit on the PM's gaddi is concerned.
Of far greater import is the quality of our elected political masters of the universe. This country has the great misfortune of being saddled with hundreds of illiterate (or at best poorly literate) goons with criminal mindsets running for high office through the lok sabha elections. That, to my mind, is a circumstance far worse than an honourable, upright man of Dr Singh's calibre sitting on the PM's chair. Instead of bringing in a semblance of balance to your piece by extolling the virtues of this man (along with his faults and failings), you have chosen to highlight only the negative aspects. Such lopsided, unbalanced pennings can never propel you to the top of your profession (unless you are a staunch BJP supporting masquerading as a columnist)

ITS really apathatic that elcted candidate dose not get selected for ministerial job and so called dumps from rajayshbha becomes minister without facing electoral mandate of people of india.THERE SHOULD ALSO BE LIMITATION OF 2 TERMS ONE CAN GET INTO RAJAYSHBHA,SO AS TO NEW BLOOD CAN BE ENTHUSED AND MORE CURRENT LOT OF PEOPLE CAN BE SENT IN.

Elections make the Policticians More Corrupt!
by mmmanish on Apr 26, 2009 11:44 PM  | Hide replies

India is fortunate enough that after so many decades India got a Leader who understands ONLt ONE Language i.e. Development & with Selfless Approach. As responsible Indians we must support Dr. MMS to continue as PM for next 5 years. Let's not bear the burden of likes of Advani or Maya or Modi or Pawar who will lead india to the backward stage which Chadrashekhar Govt & other Coalition Govt.s have done earlier.

I think Modi should not be in your list... Look at gujrat its the most progressing state in India... forget Maharashtra and everything else... Tatas were given a place to build their factory in less then 5 days and the surrounding people were more then ready to accept the factory coming up in their neighborhood. I feel MODI rocks... and as far as electricity is concerned gujrat is the only state in the country to have 24 hours of electricity even in the rural areas...
