Op-ed in the Indian Express
by Dev Kar on May 01, 2009 05:10 AM

In an Op-ed in The Indian Express (What we actually said, April 30, 2009) I explain in more detail the methodology underlying the GFI study "Illicit Financial Flows from Developing Countries: 2002-2006". That article addresses the misinterpretations and factual errors regarding the GFI report that have been floating around in the Indian media including those put forward by Ashok Desai and Jairam Ramesh.

Hindu's Editorial on Black Money
by Srinivasan natesan on Apr 21, 2009 11:41 AM

If Mr. Jairam Ramesh is so clear in what he says, he should respond to Hindu's Editorial on the same subject today.

Ability to remit USD 200,000 legally per annum clearly will help in building lot of money outside the country.

Congress is worried.....
by Jiggs on Apr 21, 2009 10:08 AM  | Hide replies

Why I believe that what Advani has said is the truth.
He has created a team that will trackdown this money and analyze it, the Team:
1. Mr. S Gurumurthy: Veteran of the Bofors scandal, He has personally tried to collect details on the Gandhi family monies lying abroad.
2. Prof. Ramaiah : with IIM, Bangalore, his role will be of analyzing the modus operandi.
3. Mr. Ajit Doval : Ex Intelligence Bureau Head, he will analyze how this money was/has/will be used for funding terror strikes.
4. Mr. Mahesh Jethmalani: Legal Eagle.
Now, my point is that even if Advani falters these 4 men will rip him apart.
That is why I am 100% sure what Advani spoke is the truth and that he is serious in what he has said.
NOTABLY, CONGRESS IS NOT ADDRESSING THE ISSUE IF THE MONEY EXISTS, THEY ARE CHALLENGING THE AMOUNTS WHICH ADVANI HAS MENTIONED.

Speaks for Congress duplicity.

Arun shourie has already addressed this issue in IE
by Tarun Mukherjee on Apr 21, 2009 06:44 AM  | Hide replies

In any case, there is doubt about the figures.

As is its custom, the Congress is trying to cover up the basic question of the money which has been looted from India and is lying in tax havens, by raising questions about the precision of figures and estimates. This is exactly the kind of legalisms with which persons like P. Chidambaram and other legitimisers were fielded to cover up the loot from Bofors. In its paper, “Overview of the OECD’s Work on International Tax Evasion,” the OECD itself lists studies that state that there are $1.7 trillion to $11.5 trillion which are today parked in tax havens. This OECD paper has been widely reported in the Indian press. The basic point is: even if the amounts are just a few scores of billion dollars and not one and a half trillion dollars, why should they not be brought back to India? And the fact is that other countries, much smaller countries with no superpower pretensions, have succeeded in getting their money back. Even as of last October, when the OECD released its paper, little Ireland had succeeded in recovering almost a billion Euros through an investigation into offshore banks.

Given that even small countries like Ireland have got money back, is it not a shame, is it not an outrage that, as of yesterday, 18 April, 2009, The Times of India, should be quoting the Swiss ambassador to India saying that so far, the Swiss government has received no request — not even a request — from the Indian government?

The real question is different: can the money looted from India be brought back to the country when the attitude of the government continues to be as determinedly inactive?

Can the government which allowed Ottavio Quattrochi to take his money out of banks —where it was lying frozen on court orders — be trusted to bring back the loot that is lying in Swiss banks and other tax havens? Can the government which prostituted the CBI so that he may get away from Argentina be trusted to bring the loot back?

Needs better strategy to resolve the matter and counter designs
by Ramesh on Apr 21, 2009 06:43 AM  | Hide replies

The issue is still in --bottle opening-- phase wherewas expert economic thinker Mr. Jairam Ramesh is thinking in terms of --measuring cup-- phase. This is a wrong strategy to adopt and unlikely to benefit for greater good nor his party. This phase can come only after government formation and thereafter shall come --partaking -- phase.

The momentum given to this perception held amongst our populace for decades is welcome although it does seem to be more like V P Singh's Bofor dust raising from which unfortunately nothing good came out and it had put Indian polity in tail spin. The manner in which Mr. Gurumurthy of infamous Swadesh Jagaran Manch has raised with definitive number raises this suspicion, and so does his implicit accusation that GOI was decidedly forestalling! This surely needs point by point rebuttal, if indeed available.

The mixing of political ambitions with innocent aspirations is inevitable in democratic politics and most welcome.

Ashok Desai's article uses the type of language found on bathroom walls. "Hinduwit", it seems. The fellow read a couple of methodologies and vomits out this second hand nonsense withou digesting it himself. Apparently 22 billion, a year over five years -110 billion - is an insignificant amount for this genius. To put things in perspective for dim Rahul Gandhi's like our Ramesh here - our entire Golden Quadrilateral program cost less than 10 billion.

Arun Shouri is more of a rabble rouser and lacks intellectual integrity. Did he utter a single word on Pilbhit incident!

He was so voulble in N-deal come with minor points and making a big fuss over them. He is a great debater and a competent writer, but an honest thinker ? - not yet.

Whether Arun Shouri is intellectual or not - it is not an issue of national importance. The basic question is what is Congress's stand on black money and what Congress has done about it?

Questioning back BJP is irrelevant, since the global environment was not that conducive during NDA's rule. Congress is letting the golden opportunity pass by for its vested interests.

Yeah and Jairan Ramesh and Slave Singh and Mani Shankar Liar are paragons of intellectual integrity. Slave Singh has so mucht integrity that he claimed in the 1999 campaign that the RSS was behind the anti-Sikh riots.

About chamchas like Ramesh, the best they can do is be sycophant of Rahul Gandhi and the Italian.
