by rajan sivaprakasam on Apr 18, 2009 12:20 PM

Make the voting compulsory and connect it with Public Distribution system, passports, Driving License, LPG connection etc., If people didn't voted they are not eligible to get this.

None of above OPTION in every ballot box
by Mahesh on Apr 18, 2009 11:24 AM  | Hide replies

Instead of debating whether voting is compusory or not just make a small change in all the election ballots box apart from the candidates list in every constituency.
For e.g. like the below
1. Candidate X Cong
2. Candidate Y BJP
3. Candidate Z BSP
4. NONE OF THE ABOVE.

This none of the above option must be provided to every citizen, which I feel is a democratic right to every citizen.

This is a very imp section in our constitution and all educated voters must know.

Section 49-O of the Constitution

Do you know that there is a system in our constitution, as per the 1969 act, in section "49-O" that a person can go to the polling booth,
confirm his identity, get his finger marked and convey the presiding election officer that he doesn't want to vote anyone!

Yes such a feature is available, but obviously these seemingly notorious leaders have never disclosed it. This is called "49-O".

Why should you go and say "I VOTE NOBODY"... because, in a ward, if a candidate wins, say by 123 votes, and that particular ward has
received "49-O" votes more than 123, then that polling will be cancelled and will have to be re-polled. Not only that, but the candidature of the contestants will be removed andthey cannot contest the re-polling, since people had already expressed their decision on them.

This would bring fear into parties and hence look for genuine candidates for their parties for election. This would change the way, of our whole political system... it is seemingly surprising why the election commission has not revealed such a feature to the public....

Please spread this news to as many as you know... Seems to be a wonderful weapon against corrupt parties in India... show your power, expressing your desire not to vote for anybody, is even more powerful than voting... so don't miss your chance.

So either vote, or vote not to vote (vote 49-O

by Jaihindbandemataram on Apr 18, 2009 11:01 AM

Election day is considered to be a "with pay day" that a person franchise his / her vote without any tention. I think that, there must be some rule like Tax Deduction at Source type, means it is the duty of an employer to check that his / her employee whether voted or not looking at the fore finger. If the finger bears the voting ink, then that employee is eligible to enjoy "with pay holiday" otherwise, that employee should be treated "without pay" or have to take a CL.

Secondly, except emergency duties, everybody should enjoy that day as holiday. Shops / factory etc etc. at their will to open after 5.00 pm.

Supreme Court is SECONDARY
by New York on Apr 18, 2009 10:31 AM

Indian Parliament is SUPREME because they are answerable & accountable to 1,147,995,904 (July 2008 est.) Indians.
Supreme Court is SECONDARY, because they are answerable & accountable ONLY to the LITIGANTS.

* Supreme Court cannot solve your KASHMIR problem,
* Supreme Court cannot decide your INCOME TAX rates,
* Supreme Court cannot create/review/refine/rewrite any law.

Supreme Court cannot even decide the OPTIMUM train or bus fare rate in India.

Finally, Parliament decides the SALARIES of Judges and not the other way round.

Provide power and water and house
by AswathaKumar K on Apr 18, 2009 10:28 AM

The Government should provide, power, water, shelter and job and then make voting compulsory so that one of the facility can be denied.
Without bringing parity thinking of compulsory voting is a dream.

Our representatives will voice in unison if their salaries and other perquisites are increased. Such legislation they will not bother to agree even in their wildest dream as they fear they will be called back immediately on taking oath.

true democracy

In India only 50- 60% excersise their franchise. The main reason for the balance not excersing their franchise is because, they are dissatisfied with the nominees representing their constituency.
Rule 49(o) of the election conduct rules provides an alternative by allowing the voters to vote for no candidates and if the majority of no candidate vote is more in a constituency, then the election commission can conduct re-election and the earlier nominees will not be entitiled for the new nomination. This rule is prevalent for many years, but unknown to many voters. A case is also pending before the court against the election commission to make necessary changes in the electronic voting machine. When a secret ballot is conducted, the election commission should add the button in the electronic voting machine to register 'vote for no candidates'. This will not only safe the voters in excersing their franchise but also prevent corrupt politicians ruling us. Further necessary campaigns should be organised by NGO's, Voluntary organisations and the Govt. to create awareness on Rule 49 (o).

Further, more voters will turn to the polls to excersise their franchise without any fear.

Democracy
by vanity fair on Apr 18, 2009 03:46 AM  | Hide replies

Hmm now people are changing the meaning of democracy to its lowest level..by compelling them to vote..?? whr is the freedom now for ur opinion ? if u are not votin means u dislike all the options and dont want to vote and wish a change in the system itself...BDW in our country with the mere literacy percent of around 50 and people who are able make decision are not interested to vote ..whts its suggesting..are they wanted a new democracy (defining again) or just they are lazy enough to vote.
My suggestion is first put a survey on present democratic pattern and the way our sysytem is functioning is acceptable to the people are not thn decide......to define democracy again....
