Sonia chooses Manmohan Singh

the last few days have been terrible for indian democracy - first we have the media declaring Sonia Gandhi the winner, eventhough her party won barely 145 seats in the election. The fact that congress fought this election without a clearly declared PM candidate was just simply ignored.
Second, sonia should have declared quickly after the election that she is not aspiring for the PM's post, instead of delaying it for more than 4 days.
Third, the disgusting theatrics both by the congress as well as the BJP (eventhough BJP was right in opposing sonia's candidacy) lowered the image of indian democracy to the level of Lalloo's Bihar.
Lastly, I urge all right thinking indians (which hopefully includes a few members of the press) to resist the takeover of indian democracy by dynasties and family cliques at all levels

ALOK CHATURVEDI
India's PM
by ALOK CHATURVEDI on May 19, 2004 05:13 PM

Parties do win or loose in elections; so that is not the issue. The issue was emotional- no foreigner as PM pl. Now since Dr Manmohan Singh' name has been finalised, we all Indians have reason to rejoice.
With all due regards to Mrs Gandhi, there do still exist some provisions in the constitution as per which she possibly could not have become the PM.
But look at all these fellows in congress as well as in other supporting parties- the way they have played their part in this drama that was going on for last two days was really shameful.
