Not his Mistress's voice

A very nice article and correct analysis. I am sure Dr. Singh will do very well, despite the fact that he has to walk tight rope. Although I would not agree her to be the PM, Mrs. Gandhi is very posihed and knows better than to send orders to Singh toimplement her wishes. Vijaya Kumar

Just one Question
by amit sehgal on May 20, 2004 03:50 PM

I am not an ardent fan of BJP or even Congress for that matter. I am a simple Indian who already has more then enough on his platter to really feel great shame or high elation at the prospect of seeing Mrs Gandhi at the supreme seat. As long as the person holding an office does justice to it, I am quite happy.
However there is one question that's bothering me to no end. It is specifically directed to guardians of sovereignty in India. In the era of 'India Shinning' we had a host of mails circulating, some of them perpetuated by the BJP proclaiming the achievements of Indians worldwide. Dragging even those who have a very remote connection to India or simply refuse to accept themselves as Indians. I am sure they would be flying non-stop to moon if one of these so called Indians became premier of a country like US or even some other 2nd or 3rd World country.
Would they denounce his stature or not proclaim his accomplishments because he is an Indian connection and not an original native of his adopted country? Is'nt this pure hypocrisy to pat with right hand and block with left?
Any takers ??

Dr. Singh will be under Sonia's Gandhi hand
by Meeta J.Sanyal on May 20, 2004 03:46 PM

Certainly Dr.Manohar Singh will be playing the role of "puppet" of soniaji. This is a well known fact and cannot be denied even if one dont want to.It is always known that later at "right time" any one of the Gandhi's family members will take the post of PM sooner or later. However at same time I know that Dr.Manmohan Singh is a capable person and highly educated PM ever India has got before. He is a simple man and honest person. At same time lets hope he does his work peacefully.I don't think Mistress word used here reflect bad meaning .Often this term is used when one has the remote control especially in the hand of women. This gives imagination to lady holding "whip" in a demanding style. Each word has many meanings to it when used in various situation.Hence "mistress" term is used correctly.Nothing wrong in it.

I think, good journalism should refrain from using words like 'mistress' while referring to political leaders, just because it is a woman holding a high position. It is very popular among, mostly men, to use such less-than-respectful words while referring to women in charge, but such style should not ooze out of gossip sections.

Soniaji's choice
by Anuradha V Iyer on May 20, 2004 12:30 PM  | Hide replies

I hold Sonia Gandhi in high regard as a woman. And now she has grown even higher. Today, in politics, when the word 'moral' or 'conscience' is nowhere to be found, this lady has shown that there are virtues which are far higher to be succumbed to trivial things like power, etc.

Be it any reason - like pressure of the near and dear ones or any external fear, it requires lot of courage and wisdom to arrive at this decision, which I feel any one in this given situation would have succumed to it. I am proud of her. Also, proud of her choice of Dr.Manmohan Singh as PM.

It was not any moral choice , It was common sense. Everyone knew that by stepping down she just would blunt the BJP attack against the congress.

Anyway it is much more honourable than lose at a no-confidence

You cant compare this remote control
by ramprasad a padmanabhan on May 20, 2004 12:24 PM

You cannot compare Sonia with Thakeray. Thakeray is immensely more shrewd and capable. What has Sonia ever done in governance to claim any experience and handle the remote control

On the other hand if Sonia had become the PM she would have been forced to become a puppet in the hands of other senior members

ManMohanSingh
by bgthattey on May 20, 2004 11:13 AM

Let us hope Dr. ManMohanSingh is allowed to function in the interests of the nation and not in the interests of the Maino-Gandhi family. But that is doubtful due to the common belief that the M-G family equates its family's interests with nations interests.
