The opportunity for compromise
by Khandu Patel on May 19, 2004 05:42 AM

One cannot but fail to be impressed by Mrs Gandhis bravery in putting the country first. Mrs Gandhis love for her husbands memory has played its part in her taking up the cause. Whatever the Nehru family stood for in the cold war has been superseded. The insistence of the likes of Laloo Yadav and the communists made acceptance a poisoned chalice.

There is one silver lining in the political situation. The Congress and the BJP are of strengths that make them capable of adherence to common strands of policy that the communists and the left in Parliament should not be able to derail. Since they have laid so much store as parliamentarians, I expect them to exercise the same responsibility displayed in the British and American democratic systems.

What has been witnessed these last few days has been no triumph of democracy. There has been no comparable development in political philosophy to resemble the federalists. Under the banners of secularism and hinduvta anarchy and civil war has been liable to reign. Mrs Gandhis actions seems to have removed this threat for time being.
