not a good idea

usually people who hold public office are well-off and can support large families;

in any case it is undemocratic. i think educating people about it has been useful over the years. it is unfortunate that statements by politicians are not well-grounded, there are no statistics/study results to corroborate their claims. advani is no exception to that.

Thank you Mr. Advani
by Ashish on Mar 21, 2004 11:54 PM

Alas! Finally some one noticed this burning issue. Population explosion has become the greatest problem of India and yet no party/leader is taking initiative to march towards solving this issue. If this is not tackled effectively and timely, all development efforts will be wasted. All the best Mr.Advani!

This is a welcome step. Infact this decission should have been tacken long back.It should be a one child norm. Also uniform civil code to be implemented immly.
Also stringent rules and regulations to be implemented for the following misdeeds
- Road accidents due to rash, drunken driving.
- Corruption at any level to be delt severly
- Favoratism, Recomendations for the jobs

too late,Mr Deputy Prime Minister
by Indranil Basu on Mar 18, 2004 12:01 PM

Population explosion has started to post so devastating effect on the country that only 1 couple-1 child pattern can solve it to some extent. You,the politicians - had you really been perturbed bu this issue earlier-things would not be so worse. Even now,I am sure, you will not be able to implement your words as a generalized law and you know the reason well enough. Still I congratulate you for opining about this burning issue publicly.

Indian well wisher
2 child policy
by Indian well wisher on Mar 18, 2004 11:52 AM

This has to be implemented as soon as possible. Considering China's policy on this matter, India policy is still not aggressive. China also charges a fine of 6-10 times of ones Annual Family income.

Policy decisions in India need to be aggressive at this moment for a faster growth. If India keeps quiet, China will even take over India in IT industry.

fixed term for parliament and legislatures
by Venkataramana on Mar 18, 2004 11:48 AM

I strongly support Advani's suggestion for a fixed term for parliament and legislatures and also simultaneous elections for parliament and legislatures. However, the fixed term must be reduced to four years from five years. This is because it would no longer be easy to bring down an unpopular government.

I hope all sensible people will support this move.

Where is this report from?
by kiran on Mar 18, 2004 10:56 AM

Dear Rediff

Could you please mention where the report is from, whenever you report an event??

It says "this naxal-infested town in Telangana region". Does the town have a name? I think it would.
