Mr. Khan had already nade up his mind.I guess Mr. Rajiv Gandhi must have overturned his samadhi with Sonia Gandhi's gesture to a man who was poltically inconsistent. If I recall, he quit congress after being upset over Rajiv Gandhi's intervention in the Shah Banoo Case.Then made way in the Jan morcha and later quit that too with the fall of the V.P.Singh govt.I think he did float one more political outfit on the eve of 1991 elections but faired miserably. Later , with no one calling him, he made way to Howard to do a Phd on poltical Sciences. On his return, he made himself a home in the BSP. But you all aprreciate that Congressmen can live w/o power and for Mr. Khan 1990 to 2004 is quite a long spell. With no one honouring him with a chair, this man felt, it would be really prudent to join the BJP may be he has already foreseen a sensitivity portfolio in his favour ? and why target Mr. Khan. If you see the most respectable Mr. K.C.Pant ( Defence Minister) in Rajiv Gandhi cabinet. The loss of his Nainital seat made him aloof in the Congress, but he did not quit until 1998, when the calculated that BJP wud lead a govt.ButMr.Khan's calculations were never correct.Lets hope he's luck
