Schools to close at noon in UP
by Girish Wadhwa on Feb 20, 2004 08:57 AM

This sets a very very bad precedent. UP is introducing comunalism at very young age. What if hindus demand closure for their prayers, and other communities for theirs (after all mulayam is a "secular"), there will be no teaching, only communalism

No problem at all
by Manoj Sharma on Feb 20, 2004 08:56 AM

Why should there be a problem if schools have half-day on Friday?

When we have a weekly holiday on Sunday, we were merely aping the West. And when this was extended to Saturdays for Govt employees, some or all, there was no hue and cry about wastage of productive time!

And what are the credentials of those opposing this move? Communalising education indeed! What has the Sangh Parivar doing everywhere, Mr Vinay Katiyar? As for Shahabuddin, it is the likes of him who have given the Muslim community a bad name!

Tactical move
by nanduus on Feb 20, 2004 01:53 AM

Basically he showed the lack of education, this is indeed good & bad for childerns. They should find more time to finish subjects. But good thing is they will get more time to weekends. And mainly muslim students wont loose class hours, for their prayers.

Logical one should have been 12- 2 pm off for students on fridays, offered by Kerala Government.

Bravado Mulayam! Five day week + half day on friday + should give half day on Tuesday + the already royal behaviour of govt teachers ... whatelse we want? Students today are well trained for "how to be a MLA"

Closing school on fridays...
by Karthik Gomadam on Feb 19, 2004 10:25 PM

Dear Editor,
I am a phd student from university of Georgia, Athens, GA, USA. This article really disturbs me as I am sure it does a lot of other indians. Two aspects which really tell us India's shine is more stainless steel rather than a gold.
1. What more will be done to woo minorities? What about all those hindus in the state? and what does Mr. Yadav want from this? I am sure a thought of a religious outburst, by those really "not hindu in their thought", hindus would be enough for him to stay where he is. The true meaning and goal of real education is to make people get secular in the real sense of the word and not in the politically corrupted interpretations. Are we using the same medium which is the only ray of hope in a society besotted with problems of corruption and other vices? Why not follow this approach of having fridays off and work on sundays? It will make the muslim minority vote bank more happy!!! Oh then the christian minority will not be happy...A preposterous thought!! Never mind I can never make it as an indian polotician with this short sighted thinking.

upgovt decision on closing of schools on friday noon.
by crsrinivasan on Feb 19, 2004 09:57 PM

The politicians again started to play the communal card to appease a section of people. This will flare up more communalism than uniting the people.
Let God save the nation

A step backwards
by Vikrant on Feb 19, 2004 09:22 PM

In an era where countries like France are trying to take a step forward by delinking religious issues with civil laws, Mr Yadav has pushed us a step backwards. His idea of wooing muslim voters is nothing but petty politics. Our politicians need to come up with some real issues to work with.

Friday sale
by Vijaya Kumar on Feb 19, 2004 08:22 PM

Does not sound reasonable. There are several other methods to attract minoity vote, why sacrifice education and inculcate religosity into education ! Vijaya kumar
