Death Women in Stampede in Lucknow
by Kunuthur Srinivasa Reddy on Apr 26, 2004 07:27 PM

The Prime Minister Shri Atal Behari Vajpaye should have openly tendered unconditional apology to the Nation for the incident where in women and child died in stampede. The clamour for sarees distributed free of cost itself reflects that the women poverty sticken have lost thier selfrespect in accepting the offer almost like beggars in streets. It is a saddest incident in the country whose heritage has been well documented for the respect and honour given to the women in the historical stand point.

Retire
by GB on Apr 17, 2004 12:04 PM

The geriatric Vajpayee is shedding crocodile tears. Atal, when will you retire. Please go. A PM who cant stand firm, leave alone walk is no PM. Retire quick and go someplace to write poetry. Sonia is going to reign at the PMO.

Really sad

The (English) media in general also has expressed surprise at how people are stampeding for 40 rupees sarees. This has precisely been the reaction of the middle class in general, so we can't expect the the media to be very different. "The amount of ignorance about the real condition in which people are living is quite appalling", as one my friend puts it.

But of course, if our Prime Minister honestly finds it difficult to understand, may the God save this nation!

Entire India is not shining: PM

Dear Shri Atal Bihar Vajpayeeji:

We welcome your candid views on INDIA SHINING ONLY IN SOME PARTS.You are always moderate and honest in your views without indulging in hypocracy like some in BJP do. In a vast country like ours, the priorities of the Governments should be alleviating poverty and tackling unemployment problem on a war footing. Unfortunately in the last decade so much hype is given to the so called HI-TECH like IT ignoring that the poor need a better deal. In developing countries,RICH WORK FOR THE RICH,POOR ALSO WORK FOR THE RICH ,THERE ARE HARDLY ANYBODY WHO WORK FOR THE POOR.The country is producing 3.5 lakh enginering graduates every year. If we can't provide them employment, they will become a liability to their parents and to the nation. As regards Sonia Gandhi's foreign origin,by marriage with a local person the person becomes a citizen of the country. This is in practice in Europe and USA. Are not foreign nationals(originally) occupying political positions in USA? In a Hindu country like ours, have we not elected three Muslim Presidents? This is the great tolerance democratic India.

Your tributes to Jawaharlal Nehru are testimony of your magnanimity.

Commendable statesman
by Tanveer on Apr 16, 2004 01:27 AM

Its really heartening to see an Indian politician accepting the facts and harsh realities of life. As an Indian citizen, I am thrilled to know that Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee is doing justice to his position and accepting the facts and in turn is asking his own party members to follow suit (something that even Mr. George Bush is frightened to do). I may not vote for the BJP, but I will definitely vote for Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee. If at all Rediff could pass on these comments to all BJP party members via some medium, they may come to realize that some of them are committing some grave mistakes. At the end of the day its about India and not about one individual, if at all we all could think alike.

Thanks,
Tanveer

India shining
by C.P.Gandhi. on Apr 16, 2004 12:09 AM

Lastly now PM has atleast admitted that entire India is not shining. The fact is that India is not at all shining. It is true that BJP as a party is happy after it won last three assembly elections. Print media and electronic news media is happy because it has earned huge money that BJP has paid it for advertisements in it's favour and to give much hi-fi
publicity for BJP programmes and policies, and finally DD News channels and other DD channels are
happy to praise BJP and it's programmes and persons because they are their present masters. Only persons connected with these areas say that India is shining. Nobody else, not a single common man has found any change for better. On the contrary people have lost jobs, bread & butter in closure and sell out of public sector. What is the use of boasting for heavy foreign exchange reserve when not a single pound or doller has done any good to any common man who suffers more than earlier. What is the use of freely available cooking gas, easily available telephone and mobile to a person who does'nt have job to earn bread and butter either because he has lost it or because he could not get it for long while he is young and idle.

Sad
by sudeep on Apr 16, 2004 12:05 AM

As if the saree stampede wasn't sad enough, here's something sadder: that the prime minister finds it so hard to even understand there are so many women who would go for a function where free sarees are being distributed, to understand there are darker sides of India that are not shining. May the almighty save the nation!
