I entirely agree with your views on the subject. No where in the world that you find so much importance is given to politics and politicians. Look at the huge money spent in elections, lakhs of barrels of liquor flowing in elections and the party quarrels that take place during election campaigns . In states like Bihar,UP etc.,election is a mockery in some pockets.Booth capturing and terrorising the electorate are the order of the day.

Though the ELECTION COMMISSION has laid down strict rules on spending in elections by Parliament and Assembly candidates, crores of rupees are spent by many candidates. All this craze for power is due to the great influence they wield after becoming Members of Parliament and Assemblies. In countries like Denmark the Minister gets less salary than a Senior Professor. There is not much craze for politics there. If one is found to be corrupt, the society looks down upon him.The Prime Minister of Denmark comes to the Parliament on Bike and you can meet him in Super Market! As late President Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan put it, " Our motto should be service at any cost but not power at any price".

Politics is business in India

I do not know since how many years Mr. Sopariwala is analysing Indian Politics and it takes so many years & Doctorate from LSE & ICST to realise POLITICS IN INDIA IS BUSINESS. Ask any Rickshaw walla or Pan shop walla in India and they can give you with details of which Politician or Minister made how much in a particular deal. The only difference is Mr. Sopariwala will get another Doctorate and will get International recognition for this great invention.

Any blind, illiterate person can see why these ex- Ministers and Politicians have to bow down in front of literally even roadside beggars before elections, itself is an indication what kind of business politics is, in India. Why should these people, who never spend even Rs.10 for their own tea, meals or cigarettes, know only to make tonnes of money, once they get elected. For those who allot the seats to contest is a business, and for the CMs its giving Ministerial berth is one time Fixed Deposit business
And what is the Qualification and eligibility? You have to be a roadside goondah, murderer, preferably served jail term and that branded appearance of a murderer of Indian movies. You got 100 marks.

politics is the biggest business in India today
by Venkat on Apr 13, 2004 03:22 PM

In India today politics, health care and education are the three biggest businesses and they are also the most profitable businesses in that order. Is there any one who disagrees? Least amount of risk is involved in these three businesses. 75% of the Income Tax department personnel should look after only these 3 businessess, that is where most of the black money is generated in India today. Mobilising crowds for the political netas (or goondas) is a very very lucrative su business. No other business is a match to the selling of MLA and MP tickets. The perks of no other job on the planet is a match to that of MLA and MP.
