CRI. BALL SWING CAN BE CALCULATED USING AERODYNAMICS
by damodaran mohan on Mar 27, 2018 06:23 PM

Two daily newspapers to-day carried interesting articles on the mechanics or the aerodynamics involved in ball 'swing' or reverse swing.Incidentally it takes me back to nostalgic memory of my college days in the mid-sixties.Our Physics Professor Dr RamGopal Chatterji had presented his fascinating thesis paper on theoretical calculation of this very cricket ball swing. He worked out on the black board the empirical formula he derived for calculating the swing or amount of deviation due to the air pressure differential created on either side of ball due to difference in roughness of the surfaces pushing or making it deviate which we call swing.Although I have forgotten all the details after the span of over 50 yrs but as I remember the factors like values of coefficient of friction, ball speed, air density, weight of the ball ...etc. were the different parameters he had used to come up with his formula. If somebody can look into the Archives of IIT KGP Physics deptt. Prof. Chatterji's paper should be traceable.

Change ball after 35 overs
by praveen misra on Mar 26, 2018 08:10 PM

Let new ball be due after 70 overs and Change ball after 35 overs to overcome phenomena of ball tampering and ask the opposite team to use the same ball for 35 overs to 70 in their inning. In this ways team bowling first will not damage the ball as they will have to face same ball while batting after 35 overs upto 70. Same thing will be repeated so that in both inning of each team justice is done.
