Raman was not provided enough oppurtunities. Unfortunately he tried to overshadow Ravi shastri in his playing days. So apart from batting he also tried bowling and made 1000 runs in domestic cricket in a single year(1988). Overall he scored 7900 runs in first class matches but could not break into indian team.

Not a good cricketer in his time has today become a coach. Could BCCI not find anyone else that they selected Raman? Coaches are selected to give jobs. Even Shashtri is not physically fit himself but made a coach.
