Indian Cricket Team Coaches

On the matter of selecting the national cricket team's coach, I wish the BCCI provides some clarity on what criteria it applies, and with what priorities, and how it tests the applicants on those criteria.

Everyone knows that it's not enough to have a knowledge of the game and to have been a cricketer in the past.

So what else do they look for, and how do they measure on those criteria?

For example:

Applied psychology?
Sports physiology?
Ability to take quick decisions?
Ability to deal with in-fighting?
Ability to deal with player egos?
Ability to deal with the press?

Unless the public gets some visibility of this coach selection process, there will definitely be suspicions.

Of the recent applicants, I am not sure who was a better choice. But I do believe that Ravi Shastri was an ordinary and boring player, and is an ordinary and boring commentator, who seems to remain in the good books of BCCI - like - forever.

And I'm sure that Anil Kumble was a far more experienced and knowledgable and analytical person. Sad that he was removed.

Chaitanya, I agree with your comment. consdier achievement of Anil Kumble with that of Ravi Shastri. Compare education of Kumble with that of Ravi Shastri. Kumble had guts to perform his job without any pressure ofr favour to anyone. His remaining tough and not allowing any nonsense from any one however popular and successful that player may be gave better results. Can we expect this from Shashtri ? Shastri is lucky to get continueous monetary benefits from the board for the reason best known to him eventhough he is not fully deserve for it. How such a person can dictate his term that unless he is not sure of his appointment , he will not apply for the job of coach say everything. His selection was decided well in advance and asking others to apply for the same job was just a nautanki.

Is he the only deserving person to constantly get power, position and perks all the time ? Has India has produced this great cricketer only ? You may not be knowing but his main source of income is from Indian cricket board only while other deserving self respected ex cricketers who don't know chamchagiri and have influence and connection at the right level are getting only pension from the board.

We all love Shewag.
by Jayaprakash on Sep 16, 2017 10:13 PM

Shewag was one of the best batsman of India and unfortunately he got sidelined and he played a lot of entertaining and match winning innings for India. I dont think he was involved in any major controversies during his cricketing career. He never had been a captain even though he deserved to lead India at least for a few ODIs. Whatever Shewag told is his honest opinion and Saurav Ganguly is nothing in front of such a down to earth great player like Shewag. We all Indians love him and will believe him more than Saurav Ganguly.

SEHWAGS COMMENT
by piyush krishna on Sep 16, 2017 09:39 PM

WHEN SACHIN TENDULKAR ASKS RAVI SHASTRI FOR APPLYING FOR THE HEAD COACH THE SACHIN SHOULD HAVE RECLUSE HIMSELF FROM THE SELECTION PANEL. HOW CAN A PERSON WHO ASKS A CANDIDATE TO APPLY FOR THE POSITION WILL NOT BE BIASED FOR HIM. SEHWAG SHOULD HAVE WITHDRAWN HIMSELF FROM HIS CANDIDATURE.

Virendra Sehwag
by P S SHAH on Sep 16, 2017 09:03 PM  | Hide replies

Sehwag is a straight forward player and there is no need for him to say lie. Like a match fixing the post of Indian Cricket team coach was reserved for the favourite chamchagiri of topcricket official Ravi Shastri the average cricketer, ordinary spinner and a lousy fielder. What will b his contribution to Indian cricket team by his expertise (?) . He was supported by both Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar. Once upon a team Indian cricket team was having maximum players from Mumbai which is not the case now as hardly one or two cricketers you find cricketer from mumbai now. There is conspiracy to increase representation from Mumbai by selecting coach and other officials at top board level who can help inthis matter. Sehwag in known for giving his frank opinion and telling truth without fear or favour. Whatever he has said is without any doubt truth and only truth.

It is obvious that you do not understand the job of a coach. So do not comment on the selection, Shashtri is doing a great job. Leave him alone.

It is team which is doing a good job. Give credit to the talented young team members and not to a coach who do not deserved to be a coach at all. What is contribution to the success of this current cricket team ? Do you think that without him, the team could not have achieved the great success ? What as a coach this average bowler, the most boring batsman and a totally lousy fielder will contribute to the success of Indian team ?

Tera Bharat, How you can trust a totally selfish and an opportunist like Ravi Shastri ? Shastri was very confident about his selection due to his influence and connection at the top level and that is the reason he put one condition before the board that only if he is sure of his selection, he will apply for the post . No one find anything wrong behind this ? Why he dictate his term and appoint his favourite Arun who has played hardly one or two test to be a bowling coach instead of Prasad and Zahir Khan both better and more experienced bowlers ? The board is giving totally undue importance to this lousy cricketer who continueously getting post, power and perks Eventhough he don't deserve it . Many other more talented ex cricketers are totally ignored by the board.

It seems, you do not know , Shatstri's outbursts against Ganguly when Anil was selected. Shwag is not an educated fellow and knows nothing beyond percentage and setting. What coaching credential does he possess? Had he ever coached Delhi or any team? He proved , outside cricket he is just an ordinary fellow and should not be heeded at all. If Sehwag was so clean why did he consult his candidature with others and why he took so long to reveal all these things. Does he want increase the TRP of his channel with whom he has financial agreement ?

What is the experience of Shastri as coach ? How many test his bowling coach Arun had played for the country ? Ravi Shastri was the ordinary spinner, most boring batsman and such a lousy fielder that even whenever he had ball in his hands at cover or long on, the batsman were taking single one run easily by the time his ball reach to the bowler or the wicket keeper. Today Indian team is full of young and talented cricketers with confident and trust in their own abilities. In what way this lousy cricketer Shastri will inspire them and get respect from them being a cricketer of old generation. His main job will be a coordinator between the players and the board and definitely it can never be as a coach. Can any one understand why this undeserving person continueously get power, perks and position and earn his main source of Income from this Cricket board all the time ?

Mr Sardar, by your logic, any uneducated or not properly educated player can never even become cricketer ? If board has gone by your logic, India could not have seen one of the finest fielder in the world named Eknath Solkar or a fast bowler Ramakant Desai. Do you think The greatest coach of Sachin Tendulkar Ramakant Acharekar is highly educated person whose coaching produced one of the world best batsman Sachin Tendulkar. It don't require the high education but the art of communication.
