If the injury gets worse , then it can even get career threatening , or spoil his chances for the next overseas tour. Gavaskar's advice appears risky.

Two benefits:

1)Aussies will be further under pressure as Kohli absence means they will be expected to defeat India. Also good for Kohli as he might be feeling pressure of fighting australian media, team, and also his failure till now in series.

2) Many times it is seen new player comes fresh and blast the opponent as he is unknown. Remember Shikar Dhawan in his first inning - he stumped Aussies with his attacking inning and destroyed them.
