ASHWIN AND OTHER SPINNERS MUST DELIVER IN MIDDLE OVERS-II
by damodaran mohan on Jan 18, 2017 03:56 PM  | Hide replies

(contd.)ICC rules allowing 5 fielders in the last 10 overs anyway makes it difficult to score heavy unless bowlers bowl badly. So the best bowlers including spinners must start early within the 1st PP itself when the ball is hard. At Pune besides the flat track the boundaries were shorter too making it difficult for spinners to flight for catch in the deep. At Cuttack the ground is bigger with track too expected to have more life. Thus spinners should do better especially Ashwin who drew a blank yet again as in Chennai where at least he bowled well, but still failed to get a wicket. On the other hand at Pune he started with negative mindset with variations and experimenting right from ball 1 perhaps on account of flat track. I think he should stick to O-O line, his stock ball of off spinner more often than the variations. No one expects 5-wkts haul regularly in one dayers but at least 2-3 wkts and restricting runs too in the m.o. are expected from him and other spinners. Among pacers Umesh Yadav is lacking ‘control’ in Line and length besides dropping catches every match. Dhoni? He will not get length ball more often but shorter ones mostly. He has to position himself, make room etc. to middle the ball properly otherwise it looks pathetic getting out the way he did in Pune. But he is still the best wk. and is expected to get his batting form sooner than later. Yuvi ? He has the talent although I am not sure about his fitness. Let’s hope for the best.

(CONTD.)Coming back to shorter boundaries as at Pune, they are legacies of likes of Ajay Shirkeys more for commercial interest to allow for advertising hoardings. With all the old guard on their way out let’s hope game of cricket will take primacy.

IT IS BAT VS BAT WHICH WINS IN SHORTER VERSIONS UNLIKE TESTS-IS
by damodaran mohan on Jan 18, 2017 03:48 PM

Truly it is baptism by fire for taking charge as Captain of the Indian side in all formats for Virat kohli! The way he turned the game on its head to win chasing 350 runs from an impossible position at 63/4 with stalwarts like Dhoni and Yuvi gone too was amazing ! Yes he was lucky to have had Kedar Jadav at the other end playing even a better innings but again it was under Captain Virat's watch. Best part was Virat never looked tense or in doubt the way he guided his partner to keep the asking rate well under control making it easier for the lower order batters(except the impetuous Jadeja)to cross over the line w/o much of a hiccup. Simply fantastic and there can’t be a better beginning for him as a captain for the CT campaign. One must understand that while in Tests it is the bowlers taking 20 wickets who win matches but in shorter formats by and large it is the batters who win matches with few exceptions. Mostly it is bat vs bat between two equal sides with less than 10 wickets falling on either side. Thus for winning a tournament like CT the batting side must be capable of 320 plus score chasing or playing first with roles of Nos 6,7,8,9 becoming very critical for finishing in close games in k.o stages of a tournament. Bowling becomes more important in case of unequal sides and the bowler’s most crucial part is in the start and middle overs to give minimum runs and take max wickets.

Must retire gracefully and give team India chance to groom a young talent for next world cup. If he doesn't retire then he should be shown the door
