The title of this column "2nd string Lanka" rightly reflects the Indian teams ' mindset making them complacent after the Aus high of 3-0 clean sweep. Undoubtedly the Indian side took the SLans lightly and went for big shots early in the innings w/o adequately adapting to the 'conditions'. The LSans were lucky to win the toss and playing 2nd had become wiser to keep the wickets till end. But their rookie bowlers were at their best and easily one of the best ever Lankan pace attack seen in recent times. On the other hand it certainly doesn’t speak well of the experienced Dhoni & co. not to have read the wickets early and played accordingly aiming for a modest 130-140 total than go bang- bang the way most of them went about. If Ashwin coming in the 11th or 12 th over could play till end then why others couldn’t do ? Anyway still the loss should be taken as a blessing in disguise, as a wake up call as Gavaskar rightly puts it and apply the course corrections with WC in mind. On Indian wickets the batter has to anticipate and make room before pulling towards leg-side a rising delivery that is on the body or towards o-stump for middling it properly. This is how Yuvi and Dhoni got out and looked pathetic. Even Dhawan’s shot was atrocious made with eyes wide shut.The middle order certainly looks vulnerable once the openers fail and it must be the 1st priority for Dhoni to address. Changes ? (contd.)..The famed batting line up cannot be tinkered with but a rejig of bowlers could be needed. Pandya bowls loose deliveries needing tightening or change with a spinner. Nehra and Bhumra were Ok and Dhoni could have brought them back earlier but considering low total to defend was no guarantee of success. Possibly Dhoni wanted to try out Pandya more on a pacer friendly looking wicket. That’s Ok, every experiment can’t go your way.
Dhoni's team struggle if there is even slight help for the bowlers on the other hand Dada's team India used to lock horns with Australia on hostile Australian pitches.. Yet some fools compare Dhoni with Dada!!
I had said earlier to that Yuvi-Raina-Dhoni if this three plays together India are bound to struggle against quality attacks on seaming/spinning conditions. They got away in Australia when they played on flat tracks against Aus-C team. But Even SL-D team is enough for Dhoni's team on bowler friendly wickets. Wonder where Shilpa Aunty is hiding now
