somebody like him batting on uncovered pitches against hostile fast bowling needs much more recognition than a simple tribute from any ex-player.Maybe yorkshire will remember him most.

He had the guts to drop Geoffery Boycott in the next test after he scored 246 against India at Headingly in 1966 for his slow batting.

The indomitable Brian Close

On a typical Bristol turner, with Close at short-leg as usual with the huge dome of his head thrust provocatively forward, Martin Young of Gloucestershire swept Ray Illingworth straight at Close who did not flinch. The ball struck the side of Close's head and Phil Sharpe calmly caught the rebound at slip. Without even rubbing his head, Close casually drawled, "You are not getting the full credit for that, Sharpey!". After the match a Yorkshire fan admiringly rebuked Close on risking injury by not ducking, saying, "What would have happened if the ball had struck you between your eyes?" Close responded, "The batsman would have been caught at cover".
